Cheerfully derivative yet doggedly entertaining, Number 37 benefits from Dumisa’s slick execution and impressive acting by her small cast.

Dumisa masterfully — and entertainingly — builds, twists and compounds the tension as events spiral out of control and lives hang in the balance.

Number 37 is a South African retelling of Hitchcock’s classic film “Rear Window”. It is a well-constructed, high-tension thriller that was both well written and directed by Nosiph Dumisa. The film is brilliantly executed and is one of the best thrillers I have seen in a while. It tells the story of Randal, a low-level criminal recently crippled by an injury sustained in an illicit deal gone wrong. Wheelchair-bound and cooped up in his apartment in a rough Cape Town neighborhood, with no one to support him except his devoted girlfriend Pam, Randal is heavily indebted to his former gang mate and sociopathic loan-shark, Emmie. With no way of paying the money back, he despairs for himself and Pam as Emmie violently demonstrates what will happen if Randal doesn't settle his debt before the end of the week. The film features some great acting from both Ally and Rockman who give very emotive performances. My favorite part of the film was probably the sound design which really brings up the suspense of the film. I recommend this film to Hitchcock fans for the way it transplants the premise of “Rear Window” in a contemporary setting.

Arshaad Ally and Monique Rockman are phenomenal in this film. Number 37 rests on their ability to carry every highly tense situation with just the right amount of emotional weight, and they really deliver. The film delves you in the most chaotic and intense situations that are wildly intriguing to watch. And even though it gets fast-paced, chaotic, and stressful, the film never lets go of its singular vision. Nothing ever feels cheap or unnecessary. I was scared, nervous, and enthralled, which is everything I want from a movie-watching experience.

Far more substantial than a run-of-the-mill Hitchcock homage, Number 37 is richly satisfying on its own terms as a singularly crafty and strikingly well-crafted thriller that signals the arrival of a promising filmmaking talent.

This is derivative if well-executed product, except when it comes to the relationship at the film’s center.

Number 37 is one of the most creative films I have seen by far. With multiple subplots inside the main plot, this film is sure to keep your head spinning and on your toes as it is difficult to determine what happens next. With creative writing and impressive picture, Number 37 kept my interest the entire time and kept me guessing what’s next to come. This film is one of the most suspenseful movies I have seen and director Nosipho Dumisa shows no mercy when it comes to easing up on the suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and can’t praise it enough! I recommend this film to anyone who likes suspenseful movies with clever and artistic writing and an insanely unpredictable plot.

Many crime films tend to lean towards the same main character. In the movies I’ve seen the main criminal is usually a hardcore criminal that murders and robs anyone and anything. But in “Number 37” the main character is neither of those. Randall, the main guy, somehow finds himself in debt to a gangster, but is paralyzed from the waist down and must navigate via wheelchair. Although in a wheelchair he still finds himself in more trouble with a different gang because of blackmail. Now, this seemingly harmless man finds himself in the middle of a criminal triangle and only he can protect him and his loved ones. If you enjoy thrillers, I’d watch this for sure!

We’ve got a lot of movies out there that are thrillers right now…. A Quiet Place, Birdbox. So, it’s not often that we see something that’s different. Number 37 has the depth and the intensity that recent thrillers lack and is definitely worth the watch if you like thrillers (and the ones I mentioned above) in general. Number 37 just has more to it. You need to see it, you will be more than satisfied.

Nosipho Dumisa’s Number 37 is an extremely intense action film with a powerful narrative that had me at the edge of my seat. The film’s main character Randal is a recent paraplegic that has been involved in low-level criminal activity for quite some time. Now that he is disabled and wheelchair bound, his life is completely different than how it used to be and is stuck in his quiet apartment. As a token of her love, Randal’s girlfriend Pam gifts him a pair of binoculars so Randal can see the outside world. Loving this gift, Randal finds himself constantly observing the surroundings outside his window and unexpectedly witnesses a murder take place in the apartment across the street. From his darker past, Randal owes a large amount of money to a dangerous and threatening loan shark in which he hopes to pay off by blackmailing the murderers in the neighborhood. Number 37 is a crazy story involving criminal activity, intense and violent action scenes, and a insane plot twists that I would highly recommend watching.

An incredible dedication to Hitchcock’s Rear Window, Number 37 definitely brings the same intensity. The film follows Randal (Irshaad Ally), who is now handicapped and wheelchair bound, and his attempt to blackmail a gang for witnessing their murder of a police officer. Both Irshaad Ally and Monique Rockman realistically portray fear and stress, creating an incredible performance that relayed to me, and the audience. Looking forward to seeing more from them, and I highly recommend you see their performance in Number 37.
