A very good silly-funny Neil Simon satirical comedy, with a super all-star cast.

This Neil Simon-scripted pastiche of an array of much-loved detective characters is surprisingly charming.

This spoof of the great fictional-film detectives offers consistently funny scenes sparked by Falk, Niven, Sellers, and Guinness.

Robert Moore, who has directed for the stage and television (Rhoda), in his feature-film debut has shown the good sense to give free rein to the inspired zaniness of his cleverest players. [04 July 1978, p.101]

A drawing-room murder mystery that had some extremely funny moments. [24 June 1978]

Even Neil Simon fans (and they do exist, believe it or not) will probably be bummed out by this stunningly unfunny 1976 parody of detective films.

Yikes! I understand we can’t always hold films from earlier eras to the social standards of the current moment, but even beyond the rampant offensiveness of Murder by Death, the fact that this whodunit spoof relies on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, and disability for the vast majority of its jokes speaks to a paucity of comic imagination that’s timelessly disheartening.

I loved this as a kid, and I shouldn't have given this a rewatch, unfortunately. It's entertaining, amazing ensemble cast, etc, But all in all, MURDER BY DEATH collected some serious dust and feels way longer than CLUE to sit through.
