Monster House makes its intentions clear: It wants to wrap you in a thick, warm blanket of 1980s nostalgia.

Smaller kids might find the movie too intense at times, especially when DJ, Chowder, and Jenny find themselves literally in the belly of the beast. But everyone else should enjoy a good, goosebumpy scare.

One of the most beautiful memories from my childhood, even though this film isn't exactly meant for kids. There are films you remember for what they made you feel at the time, and others you cherish out of sheer nostalgia. 'Monster House' is, for me, the clearest example of both. I’ve watched it so many times that, even though I still don’t know all the dialogue by heart, I could easily recall the story scene by scene. It was my favorite movie when I was a kid (alongside Tobey Maguire’s first 'Spider-Man'), and now, as an adult, I realize that deep down it’s not that much of a children’s film. Appearances can be deceiving, of course, but 'Monster House' was never truly aimed at a young audience. This becomes clear through its subtle dark humor, the indirect social criticism woven into the narrative, and the surprisingly dark story it presents quite openly. I admit that, as a child, Nebbercracker gave me more chills than the house itself. The characters connect with the viewer from the very first moment: they’re wildly charismatic, exaggerated just enough, and capable of carrying a “disturbing” story wrapped in what looks like a children’s package. The plot is crafted with meticulous detail, leaving you with no unanswered questions. It never underestimates its audience and steadily builds emotional and narrative tension without forcing anything (well, maybe just a little). The soundtrack is another one of its great strengths. It’s one of those melodies I never forget. A musical accompaniment that stays with you forever; the final touch on a film that blends emotion, mystery, and humor without losing cohesion. I freely admit that nostalgia plays a big role in what I feel when I watch this film, but even if I were seeing it today for the first time, I’m sure I would still consider it an animated masterpiece.

Becomes one of those wonderfully weird adventure stories beloved of children who don't mind getting a good old-fashioned case of the heebie-jeebies. It's kind of a blast for adults too.

The house itself - which walks down the street in one impressive scene - is memorably voiced by Kathleen Turner.

The three neighborhood kids who venture inside this toothy trap are wittily conceived (as are other characters, like a goth babysitter), but though the overall conception suggests Hayao Miyazaki's "Howl's Moving Castle," the frenetic pacing seems as American as an apple pie in your face.

Surprisingly enough, puberty-stricken J.D. and Chowder actually sound like real teenagers, but the cartoony look will probably alienate real-life kids that age, and the man-eating house might be downright terrifying to younger kids.

A grisly, often cynical piece of work whose joyless, aggressive spirit is made even less appealing by its soulless visual style.

this animation is perfect! It doesn't look like a movie for children because it has really scary and macabre parts, I was really scared of this movie in my childhood

The movie does give a shiver down my spine, but the story of the movie just doesn't do the job.

Hard to bear animated film with a small budget and a target audience that probably doesn't appreciate it.
