There’s something about the folkloric quality of Rohrwacher’s films, their embrace of a kind of earth magic, that prompts people to describe them as fairytales. But this is perhaps misleading. La Chimera is no twinkly escapist fantasy, it’s a film full of grit, thorns and greed.

At the heart of La Chimera is the question of how we bear the weight of the past while living in the present, and the answer that Rohrwacher settles on strikes me as both sensible and hopeful: we must, to the best that we can, eradicate any meaningful difference between the two.

La Chimera. Now this movie does the job! Finaly one winner amongst the losers! It has story, culture, great actors, even lessons in Italian gestures included! And music, great music. And did I say culture? Not only the Italian kind, but Etruscan! It's about a gang of grave robbers, but who have the excuse of poverty. But the movie also shows the devastation that can have on relics. Go see it, now! Yesterday!

Alice Rohrwacher has a unique touch for mixing magical realism with neorealism. A young archaeologist's illegal activities as a way to survive become a fantastic adventure in search of a lost love. In 'La Chimera,' the Italian director allows us to accompany a man who seems misplaced in time and space. Through his hilarious and emotional adventures, we witness a meditation on purpose, the possibility of moving forward, and what constantly anchors us to the past—a beautiful portrait of the Italian idiosyncrasy full of nostalgia.

Rohrwacher’s digressive storytelling can make La Chimera seem unstructured, but she’s going where she wants to go and at her own pace. She likes detours, lived-in (nonplastic) faces and the kind of revelatory details that might go unnoticed, if she didn’t direct your gaze at them.

Essa busca pelo encontro, seja pelo manual de sobrevivência junto aos pares, seja pelo propósito, é filmada com grande sensibilidade, cujas relíquias físicas se imiscuem às relíquias da vida, do amor, das relações. É como sermos eternos escavadores em busca de uma felicidade soterrada. Algumas situações ficaram jogadas, e a ênfase no protagonista é quase absoluta, sendo que aqui precisava se dedicar um pouco para aqueles que influenciam as atitudes do Arthur. Mas ainda assim, um filme que consegue transmitir a mensagem, mesmo com um ritmo irregular e uma trama que exige certo esforço de conexão.
