Into the Woods, the splendid Disney screen adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine musical, infuses new vitality into the tired marketing concept of entertainment for “children of all ages.” That usually translates to mean only children and their doting parents. But with Into the Woods, you grow up with the characters, young and old, in a lifelong process of self-discovery.

The mixed reviews this is getting baffles me. This is one of the best musicals I've ever seen. Everything is done to near perfection. The story is original and realistic, not your typical happily ever after, but at the same time with a hopeful ending that leaves you smiling. The casting was perfect, the acting was great, and the musical numbers weren't as overbearing as reviewers make them out to be. This is all coming from someone who generally isn't much of a musical fan. If you're conflicted about whether to watch this or not, give it a shot. Unless you prefer your "paint by numbers, everything works out in the end" Disney bore-fests.

Johnny Depp, in bushy eyebrows, sinister mustache, and a suit and hat of fur, may be too cartoonishly lascivious for his own good as the wolf who pursues the girl in the scarlet cape to Grandmother's house. But then he gets to croon the couplet, "There's no way to describe what you feel / When you're talking to your meal." Delicious.

Another example of concept over coherence, but the entertainment value is considerable.

Into the Woods left me out in the cold. The long-gestating cinematic adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's fairy tale-infused Broadway musical, Into the Woods can claim a clever screenplay and a few enjoyable performances but little else.

There are brilliant, bewitching moments allied to hilarious and touching ones. Just not enough of them in what veers, at length, between the clever, the terrifying and the bit tiring.

As strong as that cast and those visuals are, however, they don't quite add up enough to guarantee a happily-ever-after for moviegoers looking for a memorable in-theater experience.

magic that uh.. defies description.. Into The Woods A dark twisted version of Disney tales that blends in perfectly and kicks off deep emotion out of this multi starrer feature where each and every character factors in as essentially as the lead ones. Musical genre being Rob Marshall's comfort zone, shines majestically off screen where each and every musical sequences defines his keen observation and passion towards his work. James Corden and Anna Kendrick at the heart of it are quite aware of their work (just as they are in every musical number) and are supported thoroughly in major and minor parts by Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Chris Pine. Into The Woods has its first act plucked out from different tales and is smartly plotted by the writers before the second act kicks in and the twist comes in where everything goes unpredictable only to make it dull and predictable for the last act that is overlong.

Into the Woods definitely has it's flaws, mostly due to pacing, but overall, the movie's performances (especially Streep, Corden, and Blunt) make this a solid movie from Disney.

Into The Woods is a needless grim and poorly executed mess. The premise alone is not a good one, yet the movie manages to sink below even the lowest of expectations.
