It’s an exhilarating trip, filled with strange stories, fascinating rituals and ethereally beautiful images of bubbling magma and flowing lava, some of which were captured using drones.

Into the Inferno is a memento mori aimed at the whole human race, and only Herzog could make one this non-pretentious, funny, curious, and respectful at the same time.

Even as Into the Inferno invites us to marvel at our insignificance in the face of Mother Nature’s seething primordial firepit, Herzog, being Herzog, refuses to lose sight of the human element.

If you go into a Herzog documentary hoping for a definitive, deep look at a certain subject, you're bound to come away disappointed. But if you go into them expecting a series of portraits of obsessed people, each painted by one of the most likable obsessives in cinema, you're likely to come away satisfied.

Into the Inferno proves most fascinating when documenting the ways in which primitive peoples invest these angry craters with spirits and gods.

While there are no chapter breaks or anything to formally guide the audience in that way, Into the Inferno feels unusually episodic by Herzog’s typically cohesive standards.

There's something deeply unsettling about the unstoppable, magma-like flow of Werner Herzog's Into the Inferno.

I admit it felt a bit conventional, but it gets you immersed and it's fascinating. Those are crucial elements of any documentary, especially considering that what Herzog seeks to do is not to flood you with a cascade of knowledge, but he wants you to appreciate in detail the point he's focusing on and that's why they work so well. Can't believe I get so late to this one.

It’s not the best Herzog but I can listen to him talk about grass grow. The best parts are when he talks to the locals who live by and are affected by volcanoes constantly.
