With its dramatic themes spread across two wildly different halves, it makes for a unique, propulsive thrill ride whose baffling existence is key to its enjoyment.

Anvari’s movie strikes a keen balance between psychological thriller and eerie folkloric horror. Its disturbing ambiguities take on whole new shadings after an unexpected reveal in the end credits.

Hallow Road really thrives when at its most simple. Sticking with Pike and Rhys in a simple windshield shot, cutting only to other tight, static angles from inside the car, allows the pair to carry the film.

Performances are the spectacle, and both actors do a tremendous job translating the worst feeling any parent can experience. It all depends on your patience for slow-burn horrors, and if there's enough nightmare fuel to stay along for the ride.

Hallow Road is an earnest attempt to make a movie no one has seen before, only to end up with one few will want to watch again.

"Hallow Road" is a sensationally scary thriller not only for the surprises it packs but also for the metaphor it makes about parenting. The chills are more in the journey than the destination in this taut and tightly wound thriller from director Babak Anvari (Under the Skin) about tragic actions, consequences, and parental responsibilities. Conceptually simple yet narratively ambitious, the twisty film relies on its two performances to maintain suspense as it rolls toward a provocative ambiguous resolution.
