It's every bit the great songfest it's hailed as, with bucketloads of innuendo thown in behind some of the most energetic musical numbers ever to grace the inside of a movie theatre.

GREASE is not really the 1950's teen-age movie musical it thinks it is, but a contemporary fantasy about a 1950's teen-age musical—a larger, funnier, wittier and more imaginative-than-Hollywood movie with a life that is all its own. It uses the Eisenhower era — the characters, costumes, gestures and particularly, the music—to create a time and place that have less to do with any real 50's than with a kind of show business that is both timeless and old-fashioned, both sentimental and wise. The movie is also terrific fun.

Awesome! Having queued to see this at the cinema upon its initial release back in the day, I find that I still love it! It has a real feelgood factor to it! I will always love this film!

there are times when Grease really kicks in. I'm fond of Channing singing "Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee, rotten with virginity" and then telling an imaginary Troy Donahue, "I know what you wanna do." And most of the big musical numbers work, especially the showstopper: the sunlit Danny-Sandy duet to "Summer Dreams." Greasy kid stuff it all may be, but just like rock 'n' roll, it'll probably never die. [27 Mar 1998, p.A]

You just can't hate anything this energetic and happy.

Grease works as a musical, a comedy, a light romance, and a gentle satire of teenage life during the '50s. In part because of its persistent high spirits, it's a delight to watch, even 20 years after it first appeared on the screen.

Sure, it's the same trite teenage fantasy it was 20 years ago when it was first released, but somehow now the energy seems infectiously giddier, the songs zingier, the camp higher.

A limp, cheaply made version of the Broadway. Director Randal Kleiser shows no real sense of how a musical is constructed: the songs are bunched together, the production numbers don't move, and the whole project shifts awkwardly between naturalism and stylization.

The rhythmic machinery of a sugar-coated rebellion: A 3.0-star "vivid" but stagnant drift through high school nostalgia.2011 (3.0)I watched "Grease" (1978) in 2011, and it remains a functional 3.0-star record in my archive—a "vivid" but ultimately safe exploration of juvenile posturing that failed to provide a visceral "revelation" of true cinematic "raw" power. While the production attempted a "sensational" and rhythmic portrayal of 1950s youth culture, the narrative rhythm felt 100% like a "stagnant" parade of musical tropes that lacked the "chewy" intellectual depth or the "raw" human distrust found in my 5.0-star pillars. Seeing the "pathetic" transformation of Sandy—a "stagnant" shift from innocence to leather-clad rebellion—provided a rhythmic sense of entertainment, but the emotional payoff felt too "vividly" polished for a story about "raw" teenage angst. The 95% preservation of my memory is centered on the "stagnant" pacing of the carnival finale and the "vivid" but high-tension choreography of the dance contest, creating a journey that felt more like a "stagnant" ritual of pop-culture comfort than a "sensational" act of spirit. Unlike the "vivid" soul of "West Side Story" or the "raw" tension of "Batman," this theatrical encounter provided no permanent, "sensational" scar on my soul, leaving me in a state of "silent frustration" at its "stagnant" reliance on campy charm. It stands in my 2011 record as a "vivid" exercise in musical nostalgia—a 3.0-star artifact of rhythmic energy that, while "sensational" in its melodies, remained too "stagnant" to reach the "sensational" heights of my most cherished psychological archives.

This movie just had catchy tunes with a c list acting ensemble. It was soooo bad. I guess it was a hit because it was different then all the other movies' endings but that doesn't mean it wasn't bad. Just because it was old doesn't mean that it was a classic.

I first watched this movie when I was about 12 years old. Found this lame as hell, now I just consider it to be dangerously **** songs are cool, if the acting is quite okay, if dance moves are amazing and if the enviromnent is great, the movie miserably fails in many other ways. To begin with the plot which is totally disjointed, and where shallow characters gravitate around two shallower protagonists that have no other intrinsic value than to be young and dumb. Danny (embodied by Travolta) offers a cheesy performance between crazy and hypnotizing while Olivia Newton-John plays as she was nothing else than a plastic Barbie **** see this movie now is a really hard challenge, considering how of a major downgrade it is on the status of both women and men. The only goal of the characters is to attract and have sex with someone of the opposite sex. Men are nothing less than lazy ass-hunters while women are just entitled to make themselves more desirable.'Grease' certainly (and sadly) remains a testimony of the past, but it doesn't make it good however. If you watch it, keep the maximum distance to it as possible.
