SummaryAmin Nawabi grapples with a painful secret he has kept hidden for 20 years, one that threatens to derail the life he has built for himself and his soon-to-be husband. Recounted mostly through animation to director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, he tells the story of his extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan for the first time.

This is a film which simply wouldn’t have worked in any medium but animation: in an hour and a half we come to know Amin intimately without actually setting eyes on him at all. It’s an ingenious way to tell a story that’s both extraordinary and commonplace: only with the teller’s anonymity tactfully preserved can the tale itself be hauled fully into the light.

A country can be a home, and a home can be erased, and the aching, lovely Flee trafficks in the space between belonging and wandering.

Flee is not only a very well animated movie with a sensational script, it is also one of the best surprises in terms of movies and documentaries in 2021

To say it’s a stellar feat of cinema is something of an understatement.

Less a sociological case study than a psychological portrait, the film is both probing and tactful.

Amin’s attempts to get to the West with his mother and brother are harrowing enough to give you an ulcer.

In the end, however we take Amin’s story, the film is an incredibly intimate act of sharing. The question shouldn’t be whether we can trust Amin, but whether he can trust us enough to reveal himself fully. Truth be told, we don’t need to see or know everything to respect the gift of hearing all that he’s been through.

The film effectively immerses us in the wrenching details of Amin’s story, but it keeps us just a bit too far removed from the man himself.

Even as a gay man who empathizes with the plight of the main character, I find that this film, as sensitive as it is, is grossly overrated. I have read the overwhelming praise of the animation which I don't understand; it is basic, jerky, without the extra frames to make the action flow. But worse are the expressionless characters, who seem to be in shock for the entire length of the film. There is no complexity of emotion, and when the off-screen narration of the main character claims "he couldn't stop crying," there is no visual evidence. When you rely on off-screen narration to fill in the gaps, despite the fact that the actual people who lived through this nightmare are used, but don't have the ability to emote, you are making excuses for the oversight. The live action news footage, shown boxed like home movies, is hardly adequate. A movie that relies on what it can tell you instead of show you is not a good movie. Film is a visual medium (duh) and this film fails miserably. what a missed opportunity!
