It isn't pretty to witness, but the pain of it smarts.

Smart, empathetic and wholly believable.

This romance isn't a sunshine-dappled meadow, it's a thicket of thorny rosebushes atop a rocky precipice. Both actors are alarmingly natural in their roles and Ade's direction is a model of subtly shifting tones and tempers.

It's an impressive achievement: The film reveals things about each person's inner world, and how it looks to the other, without making us feel as if we're lost in a house of mirrors.

The film is an impressive effort, yet often a trying one.

If there's one movie this spring that you shouldn't see with a date, it's Everyone Else, unless you are looking for a quick, low-budget way to break up. Not that Maren Ade's film is especially gloomy or cynical; merely that it functions as a fearsome seismograph, charting not just the major quakes in a relationship but also the barest tremors.
30
Simply fuzzy filmmaking of the worst sort.

I never thought I'd see the day that I'd give five stars to a movie I hated every minute of. It was as painful to watch as a slow-motion wreck. I had one eye on the screen and one on the clock waiting minute by minute for it to end. Had it not been flawlessly cast, perfectly scripted and directed and acted, with great cinematography, I would have hit the STOP button long before it ended. It's hard enough witnessing a neurotic relationship but a neurotic relationship of galactic proportions that's terminally deteriorating at the same time? Cut me a break Maren Ade please! Had you not filmed the perfect movie you wouldn't get away with this. One of the things that made the movie so hard to watch was that there was never, not one, false move, word, gesture, action, nuance, that was not in keeping with the painful rendering and inevitable meltdown of a relationship aimed straight at an iceberg. Thank you Maren Ade for one of the most painful and revealing two hours of my life. I hate to say it, but you're a genius.
