Mothersbaugh himself acknowledges that the band’s curse has always been being ahead of its time, but it is fitting that we have finally arrived at a time when that is obvious. If you have not seen this legendary band play live yet, do so while you still have the chance, if you can. Whether you have or have not, see Devo as soon as possible.

Great doc, mostly because it was told by the members of the band. Always been a fan and this filled in a lot of gaps for me. Little disappointed that the two main guys are basically socialists, even after we've seen how much of a failed idea that is, but as always with DEVO, it seems to come from a good place. The devolution thing is interesting, but I think they're dead wrong. I think it's less devolution than stalled evolution. And what do we do when we've run out of resources and innovation has stalled? We explore. I think they're ignoring the logical next step for humanity and that's setting up franchises throughout the solar system and beyond. Still, the music has always been the best on every level. I loved how intimate they were with some really big names in music too. That is something to be nostalgic about - that connectivity. I feel that that was one of the few things that the music industry did right and have long forgotten it. I love hearing about the early days of MTV. I remember seeing Video Killed the Radio Star live on the channel. My parents had just gotten cable and then they and my little sister all **** to go visit somewhere and I got to stay home alone with MTV and HBO. It was a glorious weekend. Too bad MTV **** the bed so soon and all those good bands and videos got replace with corporate ****. "MTV sunk as low in one year as commercial TV did in 25!" - Jello Biafra.

Smith brings a tone of melancholy to the closing stretches of “Devo,” acknowledging in some way that all revolutions fade and mass cultural subversion will only ever work up to a point. But there is also a lack of sentimentality or resume-burning here, which feels of a piece with the band’s spiky posture and protest mentality.

What makes Devo worth seeing is its account of how fluidly the band switched from an art project designed to turn people off to a band seeking a record contract.

"Devo,” in its way, preserves the playfulness of Devo by not getting too serious about any of this. Instead, the film traces the rocky road on which this unlikeliest of hit bands became a success.

The deceptively straightforward package actually benefits a band that enjoys coloring outside the lines. Devo allows Devo the space to be its idiosyncratic self, both in the present-day interviews and the wealth of archival footage. Devo’s reign may have been relatively short, but Smith gives the band the fond memorializing it deserves.

It takes a group that bumped up against the boundaries and instead just operates within them.

It did its best and was fun to watch but I wanted more. It seemed to tire itself out at the end.
