If you watched AMC's "The Terror" and thought to yourself, "What this really needs is ravening hordes of mermen," then Xavier Gens' period monster flick is a must-see.

A good-looking and well-crafted if familiar chunk of creature-siege horror.

Let's say that all the films with an isolated lighthouse look a bit alike, but this differs in the human aspect that tries to introduce throughout the film, for the rest the film is very banal and also the various twists are very expected and without any particular effort the viewer can even understand the explanation of the ending even before this happens. Despite the predictability, the film entertains very well and thanks also to the action scenes rendered very very well it can never make the viewer bored. The film also manages to convey very well the atmosphere of loneliness and abandonment that the head of the lighthouse lives, making you almost empathize with both the positive and the negative characters that even if you despise his behavior, it is partly justified for all that. surely he had to pass.

This film wasn't quite what I expected at first. It has some nice atmospheric moments and one or two twists. Not a bad watch - it is a little silly perhaps if you over analyse it but it worked well enough for me for the most part. I would say this is more of a slightly spooky, sci-fi type thriller rather than an all out horror film. I would recommend this, if your looking for a fairly immersive and somewhat atmospheric, if a bit dark, watch.

Cold Skin is Gens’ best film to date, if only just good enough to make you wish that it were much better.

Reminds me a lot of European horror movies mixed-up together, but not really in a bad way. Kinda The Descent meets Lighthouse with a Lovecraft atmosphere. Really well directed and an impressive cinematography, the music score is really effective and acting is overall really fine. The main problem is that the event goes way too fast, the suspense and the mistery around the story was immediately obsolete and that's a shame for this kind of horror movie. Some elements are also quite strange and doesn't really feet the main survival story. Otherwise the experience is still enjoyable.

The cinematography is beautiful - the sense of isolation and desolation is palpable and the musical score underlines it superbly. The atmosphere that the movie builds is excellent and it will captivate you. However, by the end of the movie, you may well have a feeling of emptiness, and this will almost certainly be down to the quality (or lack of) of the story. There is so many plot holes, so many nonsensical moments that, as soon as you take a minute to think about them, you understand how the cinematography is the only thing holding this entire project together. This is based on a book, a book which I haven't read, but from what others have told me the movie is pretty faithful to said book. There are simply too many plot holes, too many unexplained actions, and too many actions that make no sense, to make this movie function as a standalone work. If you can tolerate ridiculous, unexplained actions that do not make any sense by all means give it a go - for me one watch was enough, and the only reason I made it all the way through was due to the excellent atmospheric feel of the movie - without that it would've been a 1 or a 0.
