For all the mysteries it chooses to leave off screen and on dry land, Chevalier speaks for itself: Scene by scene, it builds a vision of group dynamics as calm, violent and finally unyielding as the sea.

Is it an allegory for contemporary Greece? Beats me. Like the films of Buñuel, it’s about the human condition, regarded with bemusement and acuity.

That Tsangari resists escalating the conflict, counting on subtle political insinuations to emerge as these perplexing social Olympics wear on, will leave as many viewers enervated as amused, but it’s an expertly executed tease.

There are laughs and uncomfortable observations throughout, but Tsangari never lays on too heavy a hand. One is free to contemplate the allegorical and satirical implications, but also free to enjoy the spectacle of self-imposed insecurity that plays out among these characters.

The film is made watchable by a strong cast that renders the men’s vulnerability particularly sympathetic.

While the game Chevalier keeps evolving into something darker, the movie Chevalier is fairly static. The style’s unchanging throughout, holding to a slow pace and a muted sense of humor.

Less like a drama than a statement, Chevalier’s characters do not grow but diminish. None of Attenberg’s charming insouciance is in evidence here although she never defines any of her victims too precisely, she is blunt and even cruel at times.

This is very much a film about male competitiveness and to a lesser extent, masculinity. I wouldn't say its entirely about toxic masulinity as such but the characters featured are pretty petty, it's safe to say. Another term that comes to mind is one-up-man-ship. Plot pace wise, its pretty slow and I thought it was quite bland. It certainly didn't keep me glued to the screen. There are some cliches present and the characters didn't interest me. I watched it, I wasn't completely bored from the start but also it certainly didn't grab me nor is it at all memorable really, in fact it felt a bit self indulgent if anything. Unsurprisingly, I wouldn't actively recommend this, no. There was something that sort of worked about it, although I'm not entirely sure what precisely - the surroundings perhaps but not much else.

A big hit at last year’s film festivals, ‘Chevalier’ is billed as a comedy but is actually as funny as falling down a flight of stairs. Members of the audience I saw it with actually only laughed once. Others left! There doesn’t appear to be any rhyme, reason, or indeed, rules to the competition of which a group of men partake whilst together on a boat. The film is not only ponderous, it's pointless and without any merit whatsoever. I'm also still not sure who won the stupid contest. There are no stars in it and definitely non on it. This is a dud of the first order distinguishing itself by claiming the award for the worst film of the year so far, thereby letting ‘Triple 9’ of the hook.
