Léa Mysius' Ava is an engaging and original story that depicts a divergent approach to adolescence and visual impairment, turning the situation into something more malleable in dramatic terms rather than looking for quick and cheap melodrama, especially when it comes to the more predictable conventions of commercial cinema. Fortunately the director doesn't seek to fall into the mold, and in her feature debut she pulls off a very interesting and quite enjoyable movie. It gives something to think about, but not because of complex plot intricacies, but because the story invites you to reflect on the situation of the main character and the people around her. It deserves to be seen and frankly I liked it better than her recent film The Five Devils.
