Mostly, though, A Dangerous Method is a suave chamber piece: a series of glimpses of two 20th-century intellectual titans, in friendship and separation, and the story of a remarkable woman who history had swallowed up, brought into the light again.

This is the best thing Mortensen's ever done. His slow, paunchy, hairy Freud has a cavalier authority and a capacity for drollery. He's also seductively wise in a way that makes both Fassbender and Knightley, as very good as they are, also seem uncharacteristically callow.

**** by Georgia Xanthopoulou Based on a stage play which was based, in its turn, on a book by John Kerr, A Dangerous Method is about the relationship a young Carl Jung develops with a troubled patient as well as the beginning and break-up of his friendship with Sigmund Freud. Most importantly, the film concerns itself with the events that probably caused the breakdown he suffered during World War I and the battle within himself as his values as a responsible physician clashed with his carnal desires. The film starts off quite rough. For those who may be frightened by the beginning of the film, I assure you it gets better. Keira Knightley doesnâ

A Dangerous Method is overall a great and interesting film, but Viggo Mortensen's acting in it is outstanding! This film is worth seeing just to see his perfect acting.

Represents a big growth spurt in Mr. Cronenberg's career. Its measured pace, along with a style that is sometimes austere (though sometimes anything but) repays close attention with excellent acting and a wealth of absorbing information.

Ultimately, however, A Dangerous Method is less about the formative years of psychotherapy and two of its progenitors than it is about a rule-breaking extramarital affair.

In his third consecutive Cronenberg film (after playing the righteous killers of A History of Violence and Eastern Promises), Mortensen is a happy surprise. Never has this tightly-wound actor seemed so relaxed in a difficult role; he is the charming papa Jung hates to overthrow but knows he must.

Despite a top-notch cast performing well, and bravely in the case of Knightley, this is an austere, somewhat repressed movie. It never really gets under the skin in the way Cronenberg does at his best.

Even a supporting turn by Vincent Cassell as Otto Gross, a fellow psychiatrist, cocaine addict and unapologetic adulterer, fails to enliven the movie: A Dangerous Method makes even a cokehead hedonist boring.

Outstanding Mortensen and Fassbinder in the untold story behind of psychoanalyis. Epoc screenplay in tune introspective and intimate with the personal touch of Cronenberg.

This is a historical movie about Carl Jung's relations with Sabina Spielrein, and Freud.
There is not big story but one gets a good feeling of development of psychoanalysis at that time
Excellent performance of Jung (Michael Fassbender), and Freud (Viggo Mortensen) characters charming.
Also Viennese Cafe scene, Imperial Magnificence, Belvedere, scene takes one to that period.

A fairly intriguing take on the relationship between two leading psychologists that could have plumbed a bit deeper.

A lifeless dull film, aside from Knightley's overacted and frankly bad performance, that doesn't thrill, doesn't touch, and it's not even a real love story. The movie is just a total bore.

Vapid. Inert. Lifeless. And other synonyms for this beautiful period piece. It is nicely filmed and doubtless faithful to its sources. But it is so austere that there is little to which to relate. The male leads are strong, particularly Freud, but the female lead's opening scenes are over-acted. Gorgeous buildings.
