Slow but hypnotically absorbing building strategy game. You will feel great while conquering the inhospitable planet, pity for designer’s mistake in not being able to connect the domes. [Issue#285]

Surviving Mars surely doesn't lack charm and depth. Dedicated gamers will be pleased to establish a massive colony. Others will probably look for a more structured and organized game.

All of Surviving Mars’ interlocking systems make for an arresting time sink that merges logic, forethought, psychology and experimentation. If you’re the sort of person who enjoys losing yourself in high stakes strategy, building and planning, Surviving Mars is worth a look.

Unfortunately, it didn't really grab me, and I find some of the controls a bit unintuitive. Apart from that, I don't think it's very fair to take the game off the market and then re-release it without offering a discount to owners of the original.

(12h) played. Very cozy and relaxing colony sims. I found the game very unique and like the fact that there is two part of the game (Robot and human), I liked manage both of them. The game will offer a good amount of challenge and length for sure. Not to hard, not to easy and there is a lot to do in it. I recommend this game for Colony sims amateur. It was the perfect game for me to play and watch something at the same time. The only down side is that I find the game a little bit to easy, but you can definitely add up some difficulty and make it very hard. 8/10.

The game was free, so I didn’t expect much from it, but I ended up really liking it. The endgame doesn’t have much purpose, but until you get there it’s a really nice, more peaceful management‑style survival game.

Surviving Mars shines with surprisingly deep gameplay and a complex economic system. Most of the time you are struggling to keep your fragile colony alive and provide your colonists with all they need. Always fighting for scarce ressources and against the harsh environment of the red planet.

I wasn't impressed with Surviving Mars at launch. In just two hours I found a lot of bugs and a mountain of features and systems that clearly needed a bit more time in the oven. When I saw it in a bundle with Aven Colony and Stellaris for 18 euro though I gave it another shot. And boy has this game grown. I immediately bought the season pass and with all the content the game is simply amazing. It already swallowed 30 hours of my time and I still feel haven't seen anything yet. A minor gripe - too bad the visuals are not nearly as sexy as the Tropico games, especially the UI looks cheap and old. I think it's a mistake for strategy/building game devs to underestimate visuals, it's what sells. But the rest of the game is phenomenal. The depth and complexity is absolutely spot on for my tastes, it's one of my favourite games of the last decade.

A solid strategy game that may suffer slightly from being, as with the surface of Mars, a little too dry.

It is such a pity that Surviving Mars is infested by frustrating bugs, is at times unclear and has some resource balancing issues. Because, despite these problems, it is still a fun game, bursting with potential.

The depth of systems overseeing gameplay is commendable. It’s a shame though that few players will find enough patience to endure poorly balanced pace and experience Surviving Mars’ biggest strength – its inventive endgame. [05/2018, p.82]

I eventually stopped playing after about 30 hours because the game was just too mind-numbingly boring to continue. I was also shocked that I had only played for 30 hours. It felt like at least twice that long.

I've enjoyed the game quite a bit. It has great replay value as you can select a "Mystery" per new game that provides some extra story, tasks, goals or research options. Pros: + Great graphics + Attention to many details + Fantastic soundtrack + Mars setting + Interesting story-like elements + Mod support, helping with a bunch of cons below Cons: - Difficult to micro-manage resources, colonists and drones - Vanilla: slow gameplay, even on [>>] - It appears the game runs on 60 FPS (smooth scrolling) but the moving drones start to "warp" after certain amount of objects in-game - Vanilla: storage capacities are too low - Vanilla: some products require factory operated by human
