Super Crate Box is a fabulous single-screen arcade game from Vlambeer – the folks behind Nuclear Throne and (the infamous) Ridiculous Fishing. It’s a 2D platform shooter where the aim is to gun down enemies to reach randomly placed crates which contain a random weapon with which to kill yet more enemies. It’s a glorious loop that provides endless hours of retro flavoured high-score-chasing fun, and all for less than just five bucks. It’s also a great game to mess around with between bigger titles, and I wholly recommend checking it out.

A spot-on port of the game that inspired Muffin Knight, Super Crate Box features a retro pixel look, a plethora of weapons, and outstanding touch controls to create a challenging yet thrilling experience.

This App is addicting like few of other ones on iOS. For a dollar you can smash tons of crates with so many weapons in the old arcade way that all we miss a bit.

The original PC version is still justifiably popular but touchscreen controls only turn a difficult game into an unreasonably frustrating one.

Super Crate Box is not without its merits, and when experienced in an iCade with physical buttons the experience is sublime. Unfortunately, standard iOS play only frustrates. Virtual buttons do not mix well with high score tables and instant deaths.

The concept is OK, and the retro graphics have a cool 8-bit vibe. We just cannot muster enough excitement to care. Poor collision detection means enemies reach your character even though it seemed like you executed a high enough jump to vault over them. Meanwhile, the randomness of the weapons simply makes the game tougher than it should be. No one in his or her right mind should want to go from a flamethrower to landmines. Factor in just three stages, and Super Crate Box is a big letdown.
