SteamWorld Dig
SteamWorld Dig is a great example of how the catalog of e-Shop is always more deserving of attention.
A compelling 2D adventure game that resembles the beloved portable incarnations of cult franchises such as Metroid or Castlevania.
Steamworld Dig is a great game, a tiny masterpiece, with a sublime gameplay which works perfectly, thanks to an intuitive and extremely fluid control system. One of the best for the eShop.

Overall, it's a very good game. But it feels like a warm-up for part two, which is simply better in every aspect. It's also a little too short. Either way, it's a great game that fans of the genre should give a try.

Exploration & upgrading my tools was cool, but felt slow. Plot & characters were forgetable.

While digging in a hole might not seem like the most entertaining thing to do in a game that's doesn't have "craft" in the title, SteamWorld Dig successfully delivers its own unique style of subterranean gameplay thanks to a great balance between managing the mine, chasing upgrades and having just enough story to keep me curious without getting bogged down in too much lore.

Despite its many and obvious influences this is an impressively unique vision that offers excellent value for money and one of the best surprises on the 3DS’s eShop.

There is a genuine allure to SteamWorld Dig, you just have to clear out the rubble to find it.

Digging for three and a half hours may be fun, but, in the end, is just digging.

Amazing game. It will pull you in with Metroidvania + RPG elements and make you happy by delivering a completely bug-free, incredibly polished, perfectly fine-tuned and creative variation on a jump'n'run. This is the core of video gaming condensed. I totally loved it. Such an amazing, rewarding experience to play through and find all secrets. I just hope after part 2 they will do part 3, 4 5 and 6!

This game without a doubt have really addictive gameplay. Upgrades give you great feeling of progression and the pacing of the game is pretty good. Really enjoyable and relaxing experience. Little bit to short.

Soundtrack - Eh. Appropriate for what little there is. Visuals - Artsy, appropriate, easy to identify.. but ultimately bland because you only have a tiny window of opportunity to see anything. (Your light goes out too soon, and while a good gameplay feature, its too short-lived and too limited by a lack of upgrades. Unless you are fond of 4 minute runs OVER AND OVER.Scientific fact, kids love repetition and simple things.) Gameplay pros and cons: combat: Useless and purely defensive, you wont be killing too many enemies and you wont enjoy it. Digging: Extremely easy, but very quickly turns into a 'omg I only went 50 more meters and now every rock takes 3 hits.. until I upgrade the pick. But you'll hit progression walls (so to speak) at every turn. Either progress the story (complete a 2 minute cave and read a paragraph of nonexistent backstory EVERY TIME) or spam ore/gem runs until you can get the next upgrades. Difficulty ramp: It isnt hard, its just cheap. Risk vs reward is nice and all, but every journey could have been INFINITELY better if you didnt force progression walls. I would rather run the gauntlet x100 times just to upgrade 100 more seconds on my torch than dig into the abyss another 20 meters, go into a story cave and find out I can now drink water or jump higher.) Open-ended, creative stat increases would make the game far more enjoyable. But its too late, now.

SummaryThe clock has stopped around the turn of the 19th century, and humankind has prematurely blown itself to bits. The remaining scraps are huddling in caves beneath the surface, and steam-powered robots have taken over the Wild West.
