Keeper feels like a mix between an art exhibition and a story experiment rather than a full-fledged game. Visually, it’s stunning—there’s a haunting beauty to its world and a quiet charm in the lighthouse setting—but it often feels more like you’re observing than playing. The pacing is uneven, with a slow and somewhat confusing first half that only really comes together near the end. Still, it’s a short and unique experience, and Double Fine’s quirky touch keeps it from being a total miss.

Keeper is not like any other game I've played. I played it alongside my girlfriend and there were parts in the beginning where the gameplay didn't really catch us. But for some reason we couldn't put down the controller. The gameplay gets more interesting, and the story even more beautiful. It's crazy that you can show this much emotion without using any text or dialogue. The ending had us both in tears. Great stuff!

Beautiful little game with tons of heart and a very striking art style. It is very much a game in the vein of Journey, Abzu etc, so don't expect a lot of in-depth gameplay. Rather, just go along for the ride and enjoy this strange world Double Fine have built.

This sorry excuse **** starts as a walking sim, turns into basic puzzle solving for non gamers and ends up as a ship game with horrible mechanics. Literally no one in the reviews has reached the ship point of the game. Once you get there you realise how half baked and sloppy this game is. There is a reason people don't show ship footage. The game is bad.

A very short and overpriced indie game with an unacceptable 30fps cap on Xbox Series X along with poor image quality. Would not recommend.

Out of Xbox’s short low gameplay narrative experiences (Hellblade, South of Midnight) this was my least favourite, but it’s worth a play. For the first half I didn’t really get the point of it. The world looks amazing and the lighthouse is cute, but I couldn’t work out who the game was for. However around 2 hours in something happens and the whole thing gets far more interesting and builds to a satisfying ending.

Wow! Sometimes I feel like you need a more linear experience, to break up the grind of multiplayer/never ending games or massive open worlds and this game really scratched that itch. I would liken this to "Inside", which is my favourite game of all time, so it gives you an idea of how much I liked this. I've read some other reviews and I can only guess the lower-middling ones are written by people that didn't actually finish this game. In chapter 1 I was thinking this was a solid 7 out of 10, by the second act I had it at an 8, but by the time I rolled credits I was totally blown away by the creativity , writing (there's no dialogue) and the emotional impact of this game. Oh and it does some things that are just unbelievably fun. If this had a popular IP attached to it, like Mario this would have 10's across the board, but I actually appreciate the complete originality here. The emotions I felt at the end are rarely elicited from playing a video game and all of this is achieved with no dialogue and somehow getting me to care about a lighthouse. Anyway if you want a linear, relatively short experience that surprises and delights this is for you and make sure you get to the final act, that's when the gameplay really gets fun. I can't wait for Double Fine's next game.

¡JUGAD A KEEPER!

Keeper answers the question, what if devs made a game with no tropes, zero tropes, new puzzles you have ever seen before, 100% new puzzles with mechanics no one has ever seen before? If you are as innovative as Doublefine Studio, your answer is Keeper. As long as you like puzzles you will not be bored. I have not seen the whole game. I do think there is a Journey-like story in there to be uncovered. I hope it was cheap to make and becomes profitable More!

Without any dialogue, voice acting, or notes left behind, the story of Keeper is told solely through the actions of a sentient lighthouse and its avian companion, Twig, as they adventure together in a time long after the age of humans. This strange world feels empty and dangerous in the beginning, yet full of new life spurred on by your own beacon of light as it brushes across peculiar creatures and odd structures. Cryptic descriptions for easy to find achievements shed some contextual light on the backstory of how this island came to be, while remaining mysterious enough to avoid spoiling your own sense of wonder. Each chapter was more entrancing than the last, leading up to a satisfying conclusion worthy of your time. The lighthouse isn’t concerned with why it exists, but how it can use that existence to enrich the environment around it as it travels to the top of a mountain in search of an ominous eye, seemingly watching over the island. Moments after your first steps you’ll notice that shining your light on budding plants causes them to bloom, brightening the area around them. Sometimes this changes the environment so you can pass through. Other times it makes the world around you less dark and foreboding; invoking a sense that simply existing is enough. Not including voice acting or in-game dialogue enhances the experience by showing how one compassionate being can break through the darkness with actions alone and bring harmony to those around them. Throughout my roughly five hour journey I was reminded of Playdead's Limbo and Inside mixed with BlueTwelve Studio’s Stray, and how each game blends together wonder, suspense, anxiety, and finality in a unique way that leaves a lasting impression. In a blog post on Xbox Wire by Doublefine Productions Creative Lead Lee Petty, Lee mentioned feelings of isolation and a desire for connection brought on by the pandemic, as well as thoughts about the future after humans are gone. Will plants and wildlife continue to thrive and evolve on our planet in the future? What would happen over time on an isolated island and would there still be a desire from those that remain to connect with each other? Keeper feels like it delivers satisfying answers to those questions, though its dreamlike visuals may be a tad too psychedelic for some. In the opening cinematic Twig is chased by bat-like creatures until it lands upon the lighthouse. It then scares away the enemies with a flash of light, then crumbles to pieces only to regrow with a set of legs and the ability to walk. This initially felt like an introduction to combat to come, but none did as there isn’t exactly any type of combat throughout the game. Instead, the player is met with a series of simple, though engaging and compounding puzzles that use Twig and the lighthouse’s beam of light in distinctive and compelling ways. One puzzle involved using the light to manipulate time, while another focused on blossoming plants to elevate a bridge through to the next area. Each chapter builds slightly on the puzzle mechanics in surprising ways worth discovering on your own. I never felt like I was stuck trying to figure out what to do next and enjoyed the mild complexity mixed with a consistent feeling of progression. Moving the lighthouse around feels a tad wobbly, though it’s never an issue and fits the concept of how a living building might feel when walking. At times I would get hung up on a small ledge or wall, though it only took a few seconds to adjust my placement and move on. Occasionally in some of the more open sections of the game, the camera would lag behind my movements and made it slightly difficult to see where I was going when turning quickly. It runs at a smooth 4k, 30 fps on Series X, with minimal frame drops and rare asset pop-in that likely won’t be noticeable for a majority of players. All of these issues are minor and neither of them detracted from my experience for long. Without question, Keepers shining light is its art style inspired by famous surrealist artists like Salvador Dali and Max Ernst. The feeling of playing a living painting matched with a captivating sense of suspenseful exploration comes together perfectly. Simplistic puzzles blended with an emotional story showcase the difference a source of hope can make on those around it. Players looking for a short and powerful story will be pleasantly surprised by the impact a living, breathing lighthouse can have, just like the timeless icons of the sea before it.

I really enjoyed Keeper. It has a calm yet powerful atmosphere, and using light to push back the darkness felt both visually and emotionally rewarding. The wordless storytelling gives you space to interpret things in your own way. Sometimes, just walking and observing the world was enough to make me smile. It may be short, but its artistic style and unique tone left a lasting impression on me.

A truly satisfying experience. For about 5 to 6 hours, we get to admire the artist's unfettered vision while actively participating in it. You can genuinely feel that the artist wants to share his ideas with us, free from corporate influence aimed at maximizing sales potential (just imagine trying to convince someone of controlling a lighthouse). It’s gratifying to know that games like this are still being created. The gameplay primarily consists of simple puzzles and enjoyable exploration.

⸻ Strengths • Creative and Artistic Visual Style: The game’s unique aesthetic, reminiscent of handcrafted models or art pieces, stands out and feels distinctive. • Silent Storytelling for Depth: With minimal dialogue or text, the experience leans into exploration and emotion rather than exposition. • Experience with a Manageable Length: The game is approachable for players with limited time, without a massive time investment. Weaknesses • Lack in Gameplay Mechanics: Puzzles and gameplay elements lack depth and feel limited in interaction. • Weak Story and Motivation: While the environmental storytelling is strong, there’s a noticeable gap in why the player should continue. • Repetitive or Surface-Level Tasks: Some sections reuse formulaic structures, reducing sense of novelty. • Little Variety in Gameplay: Enemy variety, control mechanics, and progression systems fall short of expectations. • Short Length Might Disappoint: For players expecting a full-fledged game experience, the brevity may feel insufficient. Conclusion: Keeper aims to deliver a visually and experientially rich journey, and it succeeds in aesthetics and mood. However, in terms of gameplay depth, variety, and narrative drive, it falls short of delivering a fully satisfying experience. For those seeking a beautiful but light experience, it may suffice—but it’s not the fully realized gaming experience many will hope for.

Keeper is a beautiful adventure game about the journey of a lighthouse and a seabird to the center of on an island with a surreal environment. You play as a lighthouse that, for some reason, one day gets legs and can walk around and which is joined by a seabird who always sits on top of you and can help you in various situations to progress in the game. It has light puzzles and platforming segments. Nothing in this world is hostile, and in fact one can make friends with some of the weird creatures in this world. Keeper is the type of game I would like to time and time again come back to just for enjoying the calm atmosphere and the very lively environment. And because I am already missing the seabird Twig, my faithful companion.

I've lately been on a binge of art games, interestingly different interactive experiences and all that is masterfully deviant in gaming. And I can tell you this game is a work of art in every sense of the word. Lee Petty's best work yet. It's a scape of environment, concepts, feelings, meaning, sound, that you traverse organically. There is no HUD, there is no score, there is no combat, there is nothing that can detract from the lush, richly imagined world that you traverse just guided by your curiosity and wonder. Visually, it looks like the sort of beautiful game concept art you may have seen long before a game release, art that usually looks nothing like the final product, even if the final product is beautiful. In Keeper's case, it's like the concept art came to life and *is* the product. This game, and I am not exaggerating, is like a painting almost every single frame of the experience. I can't even name you a game that is this beautiful in terms of flawless execution on art direction. You'll come across very many exquisite compositions that you can just take a still of and hang on a wall in your house. Nothing is jarring, out of place, ugly or aesthetically weird looking. It's filled to the brim with a very rich palette of colors that is such a feast to the eye you might start suspecting you spontaneously contracted tetrachromacy. Its painterly quality reminded me of one of my favorite movies "What Dreams May Come".. there are many moments in the game where you could swear you're looking at actual paint in a subtle yet visceral way I've not seen in any other game, even ones that are supremely artful like Shadow of The Colossus or **** sound design is special in that the sound is masterfully interwoven with its evolving beauty. You just have to experience it to feel it. A lot of the time the music is in the soundscape mixed in with the pace at which you do things, ambient sounds and other sound FX mixed into it all. There is just a rhythm and cadence to the game that underscores everything where it can be seen almost like a musical composition. It's hard to put into words, but it's very clear great effort went into creating a world where the player naturally explores and discovers, while beautifully conducting along the way. Keeper is an interactive reel of stunning continuous shots that feel endless as you explore curious puzzles and an ever-branching environment. You'll go through awe, disappointment, curiosity, surprise, and delight as you let this game take you on a journey through its living and breathing art.

10 The game stands out with its original visual style — that alone deserves an 8 out of 10. Everything else, however, falls below 5 out of 10. The controls are absolutely atrocious — clunky and frustrating. It’s especially bad when you have to jump around a 3D environment while the camera remains fixed to one side. The puzzles feel like they were designed for a four-year-old, offering no real challenge whatsoever. The game drags on solely because of endless walking, mind-numbing puzzles, and extremely awkward controls. Final score: no more than 5 out of 10.

where is the game? I can even feel a bit sorry for Phil Spencer in times like these. It seems that despite having put together a good plan and invested heavily in the success of the Xbox, everything goes wrong. If the plan in buying Double Fine was to have an "out of the box" studio led by Tim Schafer, it seemed like a great idea to diversify Xbox's portfolio of games, but you can't avoid the feeling of having been played for a fool by the devs. After the moderate success of Psychonauts 2 (to be generous), M$ apparently gave Double Fine a free pass to make a game with no demands, to express themselves artistically. But where is the game? Salaries were paid over 4 years to deliver a walking simulator with graphics from 2 generations ago. If there was one thing I could expect from Double Fine, it was intelligent puzzles, moments of discovery, and challenging the player's though. But how is it possible that in 2025 it's acceptable for "press X" and "press A" to be a viable level design option? The worst part is, throughout the walk of this ambulatory lighthouse, there were several opportunities to build interesting puzzles, but the devs just gave up—why create something interesting if my salary is already paid? It's the logic of the public sector worker who makes the minimum possible effort. Neither the graphics, nor the music, nor the story, nor the gameplay are interesting... About what?
