Crypt Stalker offers up some decent, cheap, Castlevania-like thrills. You get a solid bang for your gaming buck, with plenty of stages to fight through and a few interesting extra modes to enjoy. Sadly, the lack of in-game button mapping coupled with a reversed default layout for jumping and attacking can make this game very hard to enjoy if you’re a few decades invested into the usual button assignments. Hopefully the publisher sees fit to update this with an option to reassign the controls.

If you like retro games, this is good. Controls are basic: jump, whip, shoot. Think Castlevania, but with better jumping and stairs that work. Graphics are low-res and chunky. Looks better on handheld. Fun challenges, but not super difficult. By default you have limited lives, and there are places where it's easy to blow through them. You can play a casual mode though or turn on infinite lives to ease that. Quite a bit of content for the low price. Main game is 6 or 7 levels, but there are a maybe 5 more in the included "lost sequel" levels. And then 4 more in a Game Boy that looks bad/amazing depending on how old you are. There's also boss rush, and unique challenge levels.

A decent, slightly above par, platformer. It's over in a flash but l probably worth a couple of dollars for the amount of entertainment. In the end, I finished it. Which is more than I can say for 90% of the games I play.

My rating speaks better than my words. I think fans of retro games should try it. But value your time
