It all promises to be very twisty and knotty as the mystery of who ordered Stephen Marshbrook's murder unfolds; after the first episode, I reckon we're in for an engaging – if not particularly original – ITV crime drama. After all, writer Daragh Carville certainly delivered with his strong characters and brainteasing plot in The Bay season one – and it already looks like he's building on those foundations for a very solid season two.

There are also car chases, and a potential murder plot, but the opening episode is at its most powerful when it hones in on Angela’s experiences of abuse and violence in her own home.

Ultimately, it’s Alice who is the main draw; an unusual, intriguing character given plenty of depth by the show’s writers and Hawes herself. To borrow the show’s title, I’m finding Alice well worth watching.

Each episode was a joy and a pleasure to watch – and when it comes to Sunday night TV, you can’t ask for more than that.
