Eternal Threads0
Oct 21, 2023
Eternal Threads is a masterclass is making a game hard to get into. The game launched into a unstoppable cut scene that consists of text on a black background getting read.
And a signin form for its platform that is half broken, with this scene playing behind it. I tried to play this game 3 times. Eventually i figured out that not all login methods work, some of them say they will be sending you an email and just never do. Eventually you login and figure out you are in the middle of a story dump, have no idea what is going on and have no way to progress the game. At this point I gave up and decided I dont need this hassle in my life. I got this game for free as part of an epic giveaway and since then it has wasted about 30 minutes of my time and actively worked to frustrate me. Did a single person play the actual release candidate of this game? Even if the sign-in form worked, it is still the worst possible experience you could give a user. And I have huge doubt that a unskippable narration over a static screen with a huge text dump, even if not interrupted by a login form, is good UX. Version: Epic platform

What Makes You Tick: A Stitch in Time10

10 years latter, multiple playthroughs, a remake, and this is my favourite game of all time. I have played a lot of point and click adventure games. I have reviewed a lot of point and click adventure games. And a surprising percentage of them have been basically perfect 10/10 games. But I don't remember most of them 5 years later, and even if I do I don't want to play them again. But WMYT: ASIT is a game I keep coming back to, a game I am always remembering fondly.

Ring: The Legend of the Nibelungen3

An amazing idea. But with an unintelligible story and puzzles that make even less sense. 90% of the puzzles, you are not supposed to know what to do, just try random things and have random things happen. Short, fairly ugly, in my opinion there is no reason to ever play this game. And for some reason, it is separated into 4 nonlinear gameplay segments, even thought the stories in these segments are linear, and happen one after the others. So if you choose the wrong order, the story told will be out of order.

The Sacred Rings9

A great first person adventure. Head and shoulders above its predecessor. Think Myst IV era Myst-like. While the first game played like a somewhat poor amalgamation of Myst and Atlantis, this sequel adds in Syberia, and possibly Dracula, as more modern influences, and just does a far far better job of it.

Graphics are blurry, puzzle bits are spread around (so wandering around writing everything you see down is necessary to solve pretty much every puzzle). So a step back from Riven, but still very enjoyable.

Interesting concept, always wanted to play a serial killer personally and this is pretty close. But they could not of gone about making a more bland game. You do not get to figure out how to do anything, it is just a very bland specific and boring series of linear short puzzles that have a gore shot at the end. I cannot believe how well it is doing with the reviews, it is not even close to good enough to get a 3, let alone a 6.2. Add this this horrible gameplay really strange graphics. Half the game was extremal dark. Middle of the game, 8 windows and a series of light. You cannot see 3 feet in fount of you, everything is black and shadowy. I looked it up, apparently this is how it is supposed to be. Then, about halfway through, it changed for me. Everything was washed-out and very bright, like they just took the blackened graphics and lightened them. At least you could see the doors and other objects then.

The Journey Down: Chapter One8

Quite good, and even better now with the reduced price. I love the graphics, I love the music, and the gameplay is decent classic adventure fair. And the story is quite good, but really seemed to only give you a hint at what you will discover in episode 2.

Dead Mountaineer's Hotel5

Underrated. Sure the story is horrible and abruptly ends right when it is actually just getting started. Basically, the scene is set (in like 5-8 hours), the initial mystery happens and not much more the 5 minutes of gameplay latter and in one conversation the story is told and concluded (even before the solution of the mystery has been hinted at). So the story is ridiculous and horrible but it contains some unique and interesting features. Mainly a real time system, many different optional things you can do, multiple endings, and a nice long and atmospheric scene setting intro.

Portal 25

Portal 2 is a great cinematic experience. But as a game and as a sequel to Portal it is horrible.
Every aspect of the game is inferior to Portal: the writing, the gameplay, the pace.
There are really no puzzles, just platforming.
99% of "puzzles" involving shooting the 2 portable wall segments you can see and walking through the closest one, repeat.
The great cinematics can make it seem like you are doing something interesting, but it is all a transparent illusion.
