Metacritic says of the series: "Critics don't seem to love the pilot, finding the show unsure of whether it wants to be a comedy or an earnest sci-fi adventure, and failing at both." At least it came close on both counts. Same for the two episodes to follow. But successive episodes - especially six and seven - have lapsed into predictable and cheesy plots too irritating to give a care about. And since this isn't purely sitcom, that part is sorely needed. Was nice while it lasted.

This series is the perfect size for the story : a movie cannot do justice to any good story, and a many-season tv series wringing every drop of life from said story is just gross. And that's just another facet to this gem : every way you view it The Night Manager is brilliant. Outstanding story (screen writing always comes first), locales and cinematography are a treat, superbly cast. After a very good start, I kept waiting for the episodes to begin to disappoint. Inevitable with most shows - not with The Night Manager.

A near-perfect segue from "that other show". BCS doesn't try to pick things up, match it's intensity, or fall prey to the other pitfalls of being in such a large shadow. But it's classic Vince Gilligan, and I couldn't think of a better Saul Goodman prequel track. I love the pacing and style, and 9 of 10 episodes have been terrific. So far, so good.
