The amazing world and writing of the Utawarerumono games totally **** me in from beginning to end. The SRPG battles really helped to set in the story, were unique, and never grindy like most others on the market. Absolutely would recommend to people who want a JRPG with writing > gameplay.

This game is extremely boring with an inorganic story that just comes off as anti-establishment, anti-white, and anti-American. It's basically oppression porn for people disconnected from reality who want their beliefs reconfirmed by anything. The graphics are cheap as can be, the music is uninspired, gameplay is minimal, and the voiceover is low-quality. I would only recommend LiS2 to people who want to laugh at it, but ep. 2 and 3 are really slow and low-stakes.

Nexus was just the way for Atlus to make a buck and not have to trash the assets they made for Untold 3. If they actually took the standout labyrinths from EOIII then there would be the Porcelain Forest instead of the Undersea Grotto. This game is also extremely overlong and the strata that are unique to Nexus have all of 2 environments. Seriously, this game has too many plain green forests. Every game has it's introduction forest included. All in all, Nexus just feels like a cobbled together cashgrab in a desperate attempt to reuse assets and squeeze out a few sales from anybody who doesn't have EO burnout. Oh, and if you were expecting Nexus to make improvements on gameplay from EOV, you've been misled.

Ever since version 4.0/the introduction of Main Power Up the meta has been ass. Oftentimes getting splatted is more "who's cheesing the game" than anything else. Even the casual Turf War mode is full of people who waste time slapping the ZR button instead of playing the game. Get rid of snipers and rebalance the game and it'll be great again. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse

Jan 20, 2017
The writing is absolutely terrible, the gameplay is an improvement, but the narrative is just flat out stupid. Apocalypse basically goes out of its way to push along with a Firnedship is Magic narrative while also pretending to give players choices that mean anything. Any time you take the 'mean guy' choice because a character is just being annoying or whatever, the dialogue flow stutters for only a second before it goes to acting like what just happened did not in fact happen. You can be completely mean the entire game and everybody will be surprised in the end when you pick Dagda's ending. The dungeons are okay, lots of boring rehashes of locations in SMTIV, and the last dungeon will make you curse the game for not having a way of knowing where warps will take you. All in all I don't think it's that great of an experience. The gameplay is only a bit better than SMTIV, and the story is a *lot* worse. Worse, I think, is if you played the two games in succession then SMTIVA would confuse you with retcons and changes while also boring you with the same dungeons and locations.

Fashion Forward is a bit of a mixed bag. There's a lot more expansion in the items, with the detriment of most of them becoming more pixelated, most everything is made more childish...I dont mind that as much as I mind the lack of draw to keep playing beyond some of the story elements. You don't really get rewards for anything. I love making outfits and the ability to now do people's hair and make-up, but the designer and modeling parts were bare-bones and unnecessary, plus the way you get more colors in your overall palate is by taking photos of random stuff. Yuck. Fashion Forward is a proper sequel, that's how I want to put it. It has some give and take, it needs to be polished more. The game before it can still be seen as better in a lot of ways. It doesn't wholly copy paste and refine Trendsetters, and I wouldn't want it to. I'm satisfied but I want more. If that makes much sense. =P

Operation Abyss is a pretty good game, or it would be if it wasn't bogged down by its atrocious UI. Seriously, almost nothing in this game follows the basic rules of how the simplest of menus should work. Trying to check your status or buying items from the shop will leave you blundering around checking and trying to understand every option. It feels like Operation Abyss tried to be unique, but didn't realize in time why the UI conventions we have exist in the first place. Don't even bother trying to look in the manual for how to do what you're looking to do because you'll be sent in circles trying to understand the ridiculous jargon. The story isn't enough for me, a serial FFWD-er, to pay attention to. The character designs and art direction are just passable, and the battle system is about as senseless as anything else. It being a simple (aka, hard mess up) genre saves it from destruction, and it has its own enjoyable moments, but I'd say to skip it. The frustrations aren't worth it, it's too hard to *really* get into because it is so incomprehensible.

Everybody always told me this game was complete ass, but I wanted to give it a chance so I popped it in my PS3. What I found was a really good game that gets pulled back by some weird visual presentation and sloppy/ downright lazy animation. There's no denying this, but taking a look at the rest of the game, the battle system is unique and engrossing and playing it I found myself genuinely caring about the main characters and getting involved in the wedding. Oh, and the music. The music was largely composed by Yuzo Koshiro, and as usual for Koshiro, it's pretty great. There are a few lackluster tracks, but they get outweighed by amazing ones. The "dungeons" in the game aren't really special for the most part, but the lighting and coloring can be really striking. Other than that the visuals aren't anything special. The main heroine has a neat design and animates alright (she's the most well done in the game, no surprise there,) but that's really it. Bringing it back to the battle system, it's different from your usual JRPG. You face an enemy one-on-one in real time, alternately shooting from a distance or using a knife in melee combat. It's kind of repetitive, all enemies of the same type pretty much do the same thing, but I find it to be more so engrossing as you have to keep everything in order and be quick on the draw. In a way it's like a real time version of Fate/Extra on the PSP (same developers.) I wish I could use the D-pad instead of the L-stick in battle, but I guess it works fine. As does the rest of the game. I have not encountered a single glitch or bug.

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth
3
User Scoremidipon
Feb 16, 2015
Persona Q lacks the music, atmosphere, balance, and party building compared to other dungeon crawlers. The characters barely make up for it, as they are almost all incredibly gross caricatures of what they were in their original incarnations. Atlus tried painting over Etrian Odyssey with Persona and added a few flares to make it better and to make the paint less noticeable, but they failed at recreating what Etrian Odyssey does to make itself amazing, so we have a game that rubs the wrong way in almost every respect. Speaking of respect, Persona Q does not respect the intelligence of it's players. Every time it has an opportunity the characters will launch into a 2 minute conversation just to point out the painfully obvious, like how the spiked floor tiles will damage you or the moving tiles will move you. As if that wasn't bad enough the characters are always announcing every single treasure chest in front of you or telling you that a party member got poisoned in battle. Seriously, nobody playing this game needs this much hand-holding. To compare more to Etrian Odyssey, the F.O.E.s in this game are poorly handled in comparison. They work okay in that they are used to make you seriously consider where you go, but bad in that they have too much HP and give too small rewards for fighting them. In that respect, F.O.E.s are there solely to act as puzzle elements and should never be encountered with the intention of beating and getting good EXP from them or judging your overall power. Persona Q is a poorly executed game in every aspect but its visual design. One more thing, this game has no business having a horror dungeon in it. The Persona series has no horror to speak of, so people will be playing this game and suddenly get to an unannounced serious horror section that is more or less just there because it has to be because spook houses are a cliche of Japanese culture festivals. If you want to have horror, fine, but don't put it in a game whose series is not horror in the slightest. Nobody would have missed it if it wasn't in the game.

The demon negotiation system is at an all-time high for the series, being both as complex and simple as it has to be. Demon alignments play a large role in the gameplay, but don't limit you regardless of what path you take. The characters and story are splendid. They'll make you seriously consider the situation and can change the way you view the world. Atlus' portrait of humanity's downfall, the stress of keeping calm during the mission, and how your crew mates slip away from themselves are a testament to what a video game can achieve. I think this game will serve as an amazing game-changer for people for years to come. It does not hold back in any respect, so players have to be prepared to bite back when picking up this gem.
