Cassandra's Dream

I recently rewatched this film and though I remember liking it the first time it was ( I certainly can't say lovlier) better the 2nd time around. It works on so many levels the classic story, the acting, perfect Hitchcokian score courtesy of Philip Glass and finally it is beautifully shot. I agree with Manahlo Dargas maybe Woody should abandon comedies all together? I especially feel that after seeing "From Rome with Love". Cassandra's Crossing is one of those movies you want to rescue the characters, save them from themselves somehow. The two leads, Colin Farrel & Ewan McGregor have such chemistry and Farrel gives a truly poignant performance makes a gambling addiction understandable in a way I've not seen before on screen. Please see this film

I re-watched this film last night and was completely bowled over. What a screenplay! John Irving is not easy to adapt and "Widow for One Year" was particularly unadaptable but Tod Williams captures the wit and sadness of this heartbreaking tale. I don't know what else he has directed but I plan on finding out. Far and away the best performance of Kim Basingers career she is just so beautifully unhappy. Trying to sexually release herself from a tragedy as if one can. The young man John Foster who plays the intern Eddie O'Hare hired for the summer is so believable in his honesty and awkwardness. He doesn't just lust after Marion he truly loves her and you know it can't end well. The entire cast give there all not afraid to look hediously riduculous. Jeff Bridges is so alternately repulsive and seductive like a pretty snake, one of his better performances as well. Having spent time in the Hamptons I can testify that they get that right as well. That combination of New England small town and New York big time celebrity each exploiting the other. The score was pitch perfect. I highly recommend this movie,

This might be Speilbergs best movie to date. Such a pleasure to see an epic film shot withought CGI a real cinematic experience. It has it all superb acting, well edited, beautifully shot, and most of all the marvelous story with it's timeless anti war message, a true classic. I do have one major criticism and that is the God awful score. It is so unecessarily and completely over the top as to be gratuitious. You have something so lovely and powerful there is no need cue the viewers for the right emotion for this particular scene. I wish Mr. Speilberg would rescore it, the music sets the wrong tone and almost cheapens it. Otherwise it is sublime and it will win best cinematography and perhaps best picture as well.

What an awful flim. The most sympathetic character was by far the cat. I grew so tired of looking at Miranda July in her miniskirts in just about each and every scene. Any viewer with half a brain knew she was hopelessly insecure did we really need to watch her gracelessly flail about in her tights over and over again. The only redeeming factor in this film was the score and the soundtrack very good, rest of the fllm very bad.

This could have been such a good movie unfortunately Dan Fogleman can't really write dialogue, At least not meaningful or witty dialogue just cliches and platitudes. Clever idea to start with just never really sparks. The scenes with Ryan Gosling are nearly all good because he is a talented enough actor to rise above a mediocre script the same can be said for Marissa Tomei she is hilarious from beginning to end. her character is given no respect by the screenplay or her on screen love interest, Steve Carrel. This is not the case with Carrel or Moore they just keep repeating the same facial expressions and lines in hopes we'll start to believe they really are in earnest. I watch this drivel and wondered will Hollywood ever again make a GOOD romantic comedy?

This was pretty schmaltzy somewhat saved by charming talented actors who are easy on the eyes. All stops are pulled out in this kiwi soap opera and they might have gotten away with it but for the SCORE!!!! I rarely leave before the credits finish rolling but as if the over the top instrumental drowning of the story hadn't been sufficient then my ears were expected to suffer through some sappy pop sing to finish it all off. Might have been Jewel or maybe a Jewel wannabe, who would wannabe? One more minute and I would have needed artificial resuscitation. I will say they did manage to convey the vulnerability and claustrophobic suffering that some women experienced in that time period. Sadly women in war zones and other impoverished places still have no control over who they marry and no choice about when and how often they'll bear children. News of a pregnancy can be the best or the worst news that never changes. Thank heaven for birth control and imagine how much better the world would be if all women had that option. I digress if you like those big technicolor women weepies from the 50's you'll love it.

I have already submitted a review and just wish to amend my score from a 10 to a 7 OOPS. Now it make senseI am long time admirer of Bertrand Tavernier's and so really wanted to like this film. It certainly is gorgeous and captures an interesting period in French history. It also raise intriguing and timely questions some of which get answered. However the title character, the princess is not much of a femme fatale especially a french femme fatale. You know they set the bar kind of high. She is vacuous which we could forgive if she had some other quality but alas she does not. She is pretty enough though again by french standards not a knock out her face has no soul behind it. Really is a shame as the rest of the cast is superb especially Lambert Wilson so cerebral and sensitive. Still it is sumptuous to look at and the sword fights are balanced between pure ballet and bloody slug fests. Collapse
