Railroads Online is a game that brims with potential but collapses under the weight of its glaring flaws. What could have been an immersive, satisfying simulation experience ends up as an exercise in frustration and disappointment. Let’s start with the lack of ambient sound. Playing Railroads Online feels like operating in a vacuum. The absence of wind, birds, or even footsteps creates an unnervingly sterile environment. The only sounds you’ll hear are the trains, and unfortunately, even those are lackluster. When moving slowly, they’re passable. But at higher speeds, the sound effects devolve into what feels like a slapdash attempt: the audio seems artificially sped up, reminiscent of a video played at 1.5x speed. It’s comical and completely breaks immersion. Worse yet, the industries’ sound effects are either gratingly loud or sporadically odd, further detracting from the experience. Adding to the bizarre inconsistencies, cutting down a tiny sapling and felling a massive tree produce the exact same sound. Even stranger, cutting rock somehow uses the same audio as chopping wood. These shortcuts smack of a lack of polish, leaving the game feeling rushed and amateurish. The game’s interface is another major downfall. On console, the lack of a top-down view makes building tracks an exercise in futility. Designing aesthetically pleasing or functional loops is almost impossible without being able to see what you’re doing. For a game that hinges on creating an efficient railway system, this omission feels unforgivable, especially on platforms where precision tools like a mouse aren’t an option. Then there’s the glaring absence of any statistics or meaningful data. You’re ostensibly running a business, yet the game provides no spreadsheets, production numbers, or financial breakdowns. There’s no feedback on industry performance, no indication of supply-and-demand trends, and no sense of progress. You’re left hauling goods for reasons that feel arbitrary, with no sense of accomplishment or strategy. Overall, Railroads Online is one of the most frustrating gaming experiences I’ve encountered. It’s not just unpolished, it’s broken, disjointed, and, frankly, infuriating. The fact that it was ported to console in this state is baffling. With so many issues needing to be addressed, it’s hard to recommend this game to anyone. Unless major updates overhaul nearly every aspect of the gameplay, Railroads Online is a complete derailment. If I could give it -0 I would.

What seems like a promising simulator at the start of the game, quickly devolves into a lesson in tedium. Each campaign seems to revolve mostly around working a crane or an excavator, with breaks in between to pick up materials. The constant intrusion of good job music and a popup telling you that you've completed a task ruins immersion to the point where it ceases to play like a simulation and more like an arcade game. To further compound this, the game feels it needs to constantly repeat instructions you've already received between every step. Ultimately it fails to live up to any expectations I had going into the game and left me wanting more, something different than a half hearted port. If you are a fan of true simulations, I would suggest a hard pass on this one, as you will be unfulfilled and disappointed.
