Construction Simulator 3
Those with the patience to can forgive its foibles and push through the issues that Construction Sim 3 has though will be rewarded with that strangely therapeutic and relaxing game play loop. It’s surprisingly rewarding to stand back and survey your virtual creations when they’re finished but there’s plenty of room for improvement with the inevitable next instalment in the Construction Simulator series.
Overall, Construction Simulator 3: Console Edition is clearly meant for those who enjoy sims of this caliber. Myself? As a first-timer to this genre, I found it to be enjoyable, if a bit lacking. The moments where I was essentially role-playing as a construction worker were exhilarating, and the moment-to-moment gameplay kept me hooked. Unfortunately, the visuals hold it back and a little more polish on little things would go a long way. For now, though, I’m not quitting my day job to join a construction crew…
While the title does streamline some tasks, its controls are still counter-intuitive on the DualShock 4, adopting a rub-your-head-pat-your-belly approach that’s almost impossible to adapt to. There are lots of jobs to complete and different cities to unlock, but the visuals are tired – like an upscaled PlayStation 2 release – and the overall loop isn’t as addictive as its immediate peers.

What seems like a promising simulator at the start of the game, quickly devolves into a lesson in tedium. Each campaign seems to revolve mostly around working a crane or an excavator, with breaks in between to pick up materials. The constant intrusion of good job music and a popup telling you that you've completed a task ruins immersion to the point where it ceases to play like a simulation and more like an arcade game. To further compound this, the game feels it needs to constantly repeat instructions you've already received between every step. Ultimately it fails to live up to any expectations I had going into the game and left me wanting more, something different than a half hearted port. If you are a fan of true simulations, I would suggest a hard pass on this one, as you will be unfulfilled and disappointed.
