A perfect film, led by a perfect lead performance, with a perfect ensemble. It's perfect. I love it.

Just a really inventive, exhilarating and emotionally resonant good time! Ke Huy Quan is fantastic and I can't wait to see where he goes from here.

Riz Ahmed holds this together so well with a raw, visceral and heartbreaking performance. Countless times throughout the film I just wanted to give him a hug. It's probably my favourite performance of last year, and I really hope he gets recognised for it. Otherwise, the direction was fluid and engaging - helped immensely by fantastic sound design (What a MIX!). Paul Raci and the rest of the supporting cast were really strong as well. I had some problems with the third act went and the first 10 minutes feel kind of long but it's all forgivable. Highly Recommend this.

I really hope this receives the reception and love that it so obviously deserves. The story, voice acting, sound design and ofc the animation are all so distinct and beautiful. My favourite movie of the year so far!!!

Wow, This was amazing!! I would never have watched this if it weren't for stumbling across that trailer. So funny, fresh and engaging. Highly recommend this one.

Based on the trailer this seemed okay. I was quite wrong. Narratively derivative, unpleasantly paced and just an overall misguided mess. The casting choices and performance choices made by certain actors are also pretty dreadful. Avoid.

An imposing first feature from Natalie Erika James. This one takes the haunted house premise and grounds it in something far more psychologically potent. James' direction is executed with precision, as she takes her time to linger on particular moments and faces and corners, something essential for a good horror film. In fact, all of the technical aspects from the impressive acting display from the three leads to the cinematography which captures the sombre atmosphere delightfully provided a steady foundation for the film to thrive. The overall sense of hopelessness and dread throughout the film, especially the incredibly eerie last moments of the film moved me deeply. That being said, it's the slow-burn first half and a bizarre third act that might turn off some viewers, which occasionally left me scratching my head. It really made my bones itch - which is a new sensation for me.

This falls apart rapidly after the first act. Something about it just didn't work post the Sheila dinner scene. I also wasn't too fussed about either of the leads, although it is certainly one of the better Will Ferrell comedies. Not much to discuss in regards to the production and direction aspects of the film. They were... fine, I guess. Every room in the movie seemed to dwarf all of the actors and made for awkward character marks and positions. I don't know if that was accidental or if I'm seeing things. Kinda funny. 5/10

Robert Pattinson... holy **** Pretty standard medieval/Shakespearean drama, that's elevated by some great performances, gorgeous cinematography and some good use of humour. The third act is easily the best part of the movie - the first two acts are SUCH A DRAG. Also, the sound design and choreography of the third act felt pretty sharp so the battles weren't too difficult to watch. Wish Robert Pattinson was in this more though. He really brought a much-needed change of pace and inserted plentiful personality. Avoid like the plague if you were bored by the Revenant. 5.7/10

Underwater5

Kristen Stewart and Vincent Cassel carry this movie, delivering believable and charming performances in the process. The underwater commotion was extremely difficult to keep up with sometimes due to how much the camera moved and the darkness/murky nature of the location. I had some serious problems with the editing in the first & third acts, which felt rushed and very 'early 2000s'. A similar issue I had with the sound mixing, which was noticeably clunky and didn't help that headache. Overall, it was fun and silly enough to keep me entertained. Just please stop the unnecessary narration trend - it's tiresome. 5.5/10

This was as subtle as a Gatling gun. A remarkably out-of-touch filmmaker makes an astoundingly out-of-touch 'film' about a derivative and lacklustre situation. Rough pacing, acting, direction, cinematography, a tone that's all over the place and some casual racism. No good. 0

Meh. This was fine. The two leads really carried this movie, particularly Mahershala Ali who is truly exceptional and completely deserved that second oscar. However, the writing and direction were mediocre at best. Also, the cinematography (which was done by the guy who did Green Room) was surprisingly flat. Check it out if you like this sort of thing. Not for me though. 5.1

Sausage Party3

Right. So, to me, this movie felt gross and grossly unfunny. The gimmick, which looked fresh from the promotional material I saw before watching, became rotten around 20 minutes in. The voice work from Hader and Hill was pretty great, and the animation wasn't terrible to look at. However, this movie was just not for me and suffered greatly from dull pacing, rough humour and a really terrible third act. Kind of expected to like this a little more so I was disappointed at how this turned out. 3.0

The Lobster10

My favourite movie in 2016 for a lot of reasons. First of all, Yorgos Lanthimos has a completely original (at least from my experience) tone. The actors (specifically Farrel, Reilly and Weisz) play off of this tone well. Lanthimos's sense of humour is obviously an acquired taste due to it's obvious darkness and bleak nature, but I felt it worked really well. Didn't expect to love this as much as I did. 9.6

An atmospheric masterpiece. Robert Eggers is really solidifying his voice as one of the most original in the filmmaking industry, and along with Ari Aster, Jennifer Kent and Jordan Peele is re-redefining the horror genre. The nature of his (and his brother's) writing is unflinching and bold and the 'elevated' language utilised is an excellent immersion. The same can be said for the directing and cinematography choices; the decision to use not only black and white but the granular lenses from a similar period is excellent. I was very pleased with this one overall. 9.7
