This game is hard, not because it kills you, but because it makes you think. And with a rare abundance of content, innovation and charm, this is a GOTY contender for me

This game is insane ( in the best way ), most of the reviewers probably did not see it through to the very end. I dont have time for many RPGs these days, but this one went down as one of my favorite RPGs of all time. If you liked the first two games, but felt that they were a bit too fragmented and narrow in scope, you will actually love this one. It has a best in class turn based system, an awesome cast of villains, a mature and impactful storyline and is bursting with content. Even the voice acting is good and the music is great. Sorry Silksong and Shinobi, you actually have a GOTY contender now.. and gone are the blurriness and 30fps of the Switch 1 games - this looks and runs on par with other versions!

So I blindly bought this, seeing the insane reviews, being a huge fan of shmups since the 80’s. I love both classic shmups and more modern twin stick variants. I also like Housemarque’s former work. So to put it simply, this game did not stick with me, while I feel that the smallest changes could turn this around. First I find it essential for a good shooter to be visually clean, but in this game I died alot, not knowing what hit me, due to the excessive use of lighting and effects going on. Second I simply did not find the gameplay satisfying, partly because of the above, but equally because I did not feel the impact when shooting the enemies. It sounds more like hitting a very soft pillow, than actually making something explode.. Soundtrack rocks though. An old man goes back to play his Toaplan Collection.

Great game with unacceptable performance on Switch. 30 FPS and bad frame pacing for a fast paced 2D platformer in 2025? This screams for a Switch 2 version like Shinobi, but even worse; it should do a much better job on Switch 1, too. This is not the Game Kitchen seal of quality we are used to. Consider this a warning before buying.

Shadow Labyrinth9

I was shocked to see this game hang with a 69% critic score here - that would usually make me heavily considering before buying, even in a beloved genre like this. Lets be clear though, it is not holding any hands, throwing arbitrary accessibility options around, or providing much help beyond a slightly confusing (and eventually overwhelming) map. What you get though, is a rock solid MV with some quite innovative pac-puzzles, awesome combat and bosses, and rewarding gameplay - albeit it is not for your aunts mom… buy her a visual novel instead :-) Technically it looks awesome and plays silky smooth, 60 fps on Switch 2 in handheld, while it struggles a bit from time to time in docked. Don’t let the reviews scare you as they almost did me - this is one of the best MV’s for seasoned players in recent memory. A critic reception like this for a MV this strong, must even make Team Cherry shake a little bit…

Dont trust the reviews. If you still regard SOTN as one of the finest examples of the genre, this is as close as it gets. Wonderfully deep and content rich, beautiful and solid gameplay. It doesn’t reinvent a thing, but it neither does it need to. Soundtrack is not as memorable as say SOTN.

The reception for this timeless classic now remade in HD has been unbeleivably harsh. True, it is over priced and true, it has come out for a console who's successor has been long over due, but all that aside, it is still one of the best momentum-based platformers ever made.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom9

I find it interesting, that some of the same elements that earned BotW and TotK so much praise, is now some of the major critique points of EoW. I think that this game will come to shine more and more with time, as people start to realize how creative and bold it truely is, in making something feel both faithfully classic, and daringly modern at the same time. This is an instant classic, much more so than TotK and especially BotW ever was for me. Don't get me started on the brilliant dungeon and boss designs. However, even in Hero Mode it is hard to die, as long as you keep, brewing those potions, which is not hard as ingredients comes plenty. This aspect should be changed in future Zelda games, to make victories feel more satisfying and not just a matter of how many potions you bring to the fight. If you want to create a handholding experience, at least include a rewarding Mode for seasoned players (there is no special reward in doing Hero Mode). But otherwise I cannot say a single bad thing about this game.

This was one of my most wanted games of 2024, but it is so rough on Switch. 3D sections look very blurred, yet even still takes some serious fps hits. Even trying to ignore the technical issues, I feel disappointed with a game that is ultimately much more flat than the initial look at its beautiful pages would imply.

The game drags on for far too long, the characters are annoying, micro-management is painful and bosses are about this size of your own character. Not a metroidvania for me.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars9
Sep 9, 2024
This is one of the more under rated games on Switch. There is just something pure in design, yet modern in looks and feel, that is very rare to come by these days. Whether you dive in for the puzzles, platforming challenge or pure couch co-op fun, this game features some ingenious level design and plenty of surprises to keep even seasoned players on their toes.

A very overlooked platforming gem - and a much more interesting one than critic favorite Celeste. Sure Celeste has the better story, but Mombo delivers full stack when it comes to gameplay. It's beautiful 2D pixel art, and memorable soundtrack doesn't hurt either. I just wish it had been a bit longer ( a few more bosses ), but then again, who needs more 40+ hours games these days.

Astlibra Revision is a true masterpiece. Everything comes together beautifully in this grand adventure. When I thought I was close to the end, I was actually about 25%-30% in, and then there is a shocker of post game content. Considering this to be the first JRPG to surpass FFVII, it is unbelievable that it is getting so little attention.

9 Years of Shadows9
Jan 13, 2024
9 Years of Shadows was a game that instantly caught my interest after watching initial footage. If deep ressource management, cooking, stat leveling and story is what draws you to a metroidvania, then this is not for you. However if pixel art, precise gameplay, awesome bosses, a very original and athmospheric soundtrack and an adventure that never outstays its welcome, you cannot go wrong with this one.

I was 9, SMB1 changed my life and made me fall in love with games. I was 10, SMB2 completed in one sitting with my childhood friend. I was 11, SMB3 was the first game I beat with no assistance, and is still my favorite Mario game of all time. I was 11, and almost felt like I was dreaming when I saw the first footage of SMW. It was magical. I will never forget my 12th birthday - my parents bought me a SNES with SMW. I was 14, leaves were falling and we were at our summer house in Sweden. At a toy store, completely unaware of its existence, I suddently saw what was apparently the box of SMW2. I bought it and played it all week and completely loved it for boldly being so different than SMW. I was 16, I preordered my N64 with SM64 months ahead of time and picked it up on release at my fav gamestore in CPH. It converted me from being a 2D purist, to believe in the potential of 3D games. I was 22, my friends were all busy with their PS2s, but I had to sell mine to save money for a GameCube, when the first footage of SM Sunshine hit me. It was a very different and very hard game, that domehow grow on me every time I replay it. I was 27, SM Galaxy is still the best 3D Mario ever made, it took the rock solid premise of SM64 and added dozens of cool bosses, crazily creative level design and hey, planets! I was 29, Galaxy 2 was a day one for me, and it was almost as good as the first game, now with Yoshi :-) I was 32 and fell in love with SM 3D World. It combined the best of 2D and 3D Mario, and is still one of my favorite Mario games of all time. I was 38 and SM Odyssey pulled me through a personal crisis by giving me the breathing room I needed at the time. I was 41 when I completed my first Mario game with my then 7 yr old daughter. The game was Bowsers Fury by the way, and we had so much fun playing it together. I am now 43 and SM Wonder blew my mind with its constant creativity and magic throughout every single level. I am so close to calling it the best Mario of all time, but the very odd lack of bosses and lack of imaginativeness of those that are, keep it just short of reaching the ultimate high.

The amount of work that was put into this superbly balanced hidden gem - even in the overcrowded metroidvania genre - is astounding. Gameplay is tight, varied and satisfying, both in and out of combat. Enemy and boss variation rivals SOTN, and speaking of the later, had it not been for Hollowknight and Soldiers, this would be the best representation of the genre since 1997. Insanely beautiful sound and visuals too. "Nonsensical story"? Maybe.. But who really cares when all other aspects of the game come together so beatifully. Most underrated game of the year? Very likely.

Gradius V is a better Gradius game than Konami could ever have dreamt of making themselves, and is the sole reason I still hold onto my old PS2, since this game is one of - if not the finest - example of the genre. I had some expectations for this one, as I usually **** everything souls-like up like a dry sponge. The thing is though, while having great voice acting and a distinct visual style, the game is by no means a souls-like. While every hit in a From Soft Souls-game comes with such impact and weight, in this game, it feels like throwing a ball through an open window. For the most part, I actually found myself constantly fixating on the enemy health bar, because I was so unsure if my sword slashes even laid a scratch on my opponents. If the core feeling of the combat is this flawed, the rest of the game can have ever so great voice-acting, visuals and atmosphere, yet the experience will wear thin in an instant, which sadly is the case here.

I first bought this game physical, and then when it was announced digitally, I bought it again, to keep my physical copy sealed. While I like all things shmup, I have always preferred the horisontal scrollers - yet it has been over 15 years ( yes, Gradius V, I am looking at you, and come to Switch now, will you! ), since I have stumbled upon such a perfect example of the sub-genre. Incredibly gritty visuals, tight controls, solid performance, impactful shooting, deep scoring mechanics, over the top bosses and mid-bosses, fair but tough difficulty and an absolutely amazing ambient soundtrack and I could go on. Pulstar and Blazing Star have finally got the spiritual successor they deserve, and even a superior one at that. So no, it is not a 9, it is a 10.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury9
Feb 16, 2021
The best 3D Mario ever? It could very well have been, had it not been for the very odd decision of including a white Tanooki suit on every level (after looding 5 lives), making it literally impossible to die - except from falls. What a shame that this has not been removed from the Switch version.

Demon's Souls10
Feb 7, 2021
After multiple playthroughs of every game in the Dark Souls trilogy, Bloodborne and Sekiro, I had almost forgotten how remarkable the game that started it all was. For a game that is all about its atmosphere, immersion and gameplay, a remake that presents the game in unbelievable 60 FPS detail, with perfect sound and controller feedback, and almost non-existing load time between areas, makes the Demon's Souls experience come to life like never before, doing the original From Software vision for the game full justice and a little more. I bought the PS5 solely for this game, and my sky high expectations were easily met - just fire that Soul Arrow once, and you know what I mean. Sorry, Dark Souls 1 and Bloodborne, The old king has returned and once again claimed the top spot. Best game ever made? I am hard pressed to find a finer example of the art form.

I picked this up for its current price of $3 and simply couldn't put it down till I 100%'ed it - a thing that happens very rarely for me these days. Simply put, this is one of the most underrated games I have played ever and one of my favorit Switch games. Adorable 16-bit visuals, solid gameplay, many and varied weapons and relics that grant unique powers to play with. Impressive variety in enemy- and boss designs and unusually clever level design and flow. I see this questionable line on all the mixed reviews: "This game is not for everyone" - so mention for me, please, a single game that is? Simply put: Do not miss out on Goblin Sword on Switch.
