Project X: Light Years9
Aug 23, 2025
As a backer of this project and a guy who remembers and owned the original back in the Amiga days i can hopefully give a very honest and decent account of my thoughts so far? First off: During the kickstarter campaign the updates and communication were first class. I will admit that i never played more than the original demo as i never wanted to spoil my main impressions when the game released.I am a veteran gamer. I was around with the VCS/Speccy,C64 etc etc. I remember those gaming days fondly and the community feel that came with waiting for new games or sharing games and discussing them with mates. Gaming was pretty niche in the C64/Amiga era and most people had no idea what it was (where i lived anyway). Project X is a game i remember well. it was tough, a pretty game, good music but a tough shooter. I was a fan of shooters of this era. More so on the Snes/Mega drive and Arcade. Thunderforce, Gradius, Truxton, R-Type,Gynoug,Darious, Super Aleste ,Parodius, etc etc, i was more into the gradual progress side scrolling shooters than i was the bullet hell format. Upon booting up "Light Years" i was impressed with the visual quality, the smoothness and the audio. The game play that followed i was pleased to see it was a more progress based shoot em up than a bullet hell and the originals games extreme difficulty had be toned down (even though there is now an option for the super hard mode).I fail to have the reflexes i one had. I found myself getting caught out a few times with stray bullets (age) but i still found the game to blend a mix of challenge and progress very well. I never felt i was exposed to a cheap death. The latency and control is sharp, very sharp and responsive. This feels right to me. I also like the progressive power up system, similar to Gradius from Konami. Strive to get your ship fully powered up and you can blast via sections of the levels but lose it all and it is a battle (i like this approach).I touched in this at the start of my review. The visual look is very solid. Super clean and smooth. Colour scheme is great too. Nice use of details within the levels. Music is very good. 80-90s style electronica fused with piano melodies and stabs. Good BPM to match the action. Not only is there an electronic score there is a more rock influenced score also. Nice to get the **** Brimble is back on the audio... i also noticed Chris and Fabian are here too... friends and music friends of mine and a brilliant combo of folks who know the originals games era very well. I think the majority of the score is Dave Moore?. Fine work indeed. Fitting for a shooter and one which many veteran gamers will remember, some of us with anger (due to how hard the original was) not the game itself.Great work all around. A super solid shooter. Plays well, looks great the sounds good...

Rarely do I post a review after five hours play. I remember well the previous two titles even though I never played much of them in their day. I was sceptical about BG3 due to turn based more strategic combat. I was hooked the moment I started playing. This is a one of a kind video game with so much detail and love poured into its design. Everything is crammed with detail and choice. Visually it's sound, audio is sublime, gameplay is excellent and the pure freedom at every turn is mind blowing. This is rare for me to write and be knocked back by a game in modern times...over 40 years in gaming and BG3 has restored faith that a dev team still makes real games with heart and soul. Never played D&D games but know of it. That's irrelevant as it's an incredible gaming experience regardless of your choice of interests.

PC port, playing in mid 2023 on a 4080 is sublime. I played it originally on a One X and PS4 Pro and this PC port is superior in terms of presentation, detail, FPS and fluidity. Audio quality also feels much higher in terms of bit rate? I found the 3rd game to be a great game. Fun, silly, unique, heart warming and typically quirky and random and to me, this is a video game. It maybe confusing and cut scene heavy but it's extremely well presented. Well worth it on a good PC. Avoid native 4K though as cut scenes eat 28 GB of system RAM and eat performance to 10-18 FPS for some reason. Go 1440p with resolution scale at 125% and it's beautiful. 120 FPS.

A game that was a shot in the dark and I've been very impressed. The artistic blend of different time periods from 1937 to 2005 and with this unique European steam punk design... Game looks absolutely beautiful on my PC and runs like a dream. Excellent story and gameplay that's fitting to an adventure game. It's like a point and click title of yesteryear but you control and move the character around the environment, searching for clues, talking to people and exploring and discovering the story and world. Puzzles to solve, choices to make and beautiful settings and music. Very, very pleasing video game. A novel come to life

Far, far better game than the credit it received at launch. Take away the whole Batman theme and it's a decent open world action game. Smooth combat, excellent visual detail, solid animation and a half decent story. Unfortunately the 30fps console versions and technical issues at launch killed it. On a decent PC and with the updated patches and at £17 (I paid in the epic Xmas sales) it's a bargain, fun and enjoyable video game. I am comfortably ranging between 60 and 120fps with native 4K and Ray Tracing on...using a 4080 and even with my previous 3080 I would generally hit 60 with no RT at 1440p. Ignore the console nonsense and if you have a good PC and it's on sale it's a decent **** you can feel the detail in the visuals...audio and combat.

One of the best open world games I've played since gaming started for me which was the late 70s. Remarkable achievement. I have zero interest in the franchise but really enjoyed this fantastical video game. It's up there with Witcher 3, Forbidden West and on a good PC looks incredible at Native 4K and around 100fps.

A brilliant and fun video game. Stupid, fun, piss taking and poking fun. Decent gunplay, original soundtrack...quality overall audio and visually creative and designed. Brings me back to when games were fun and random. Unfortunately some woke reviewers and do gooders clearly were offended by this game but it's a fun and solid shooter and one of 2022 better games by far. Played on a good PC.

A 7? Yes. It's a beautiful but not a very well optimised video game. There are some strange performance issues whether on low or ultra settings. 300,000 **** this really needed? Gameplay and story are the most important in any game and both of these are average. Good moments, average moments. Animation, lip sync and facial detail don't come close to games from Naughty **** some rather clumsy game design which causes frustration. It's basically more of the same...visually a step up but even my 3080 with an 11th gen CPU and super fast RAM has performance issues that seem to be more about optimization rather than hardware. This is disappointing.

No doubt the world and stories within Cyber 2077 are incredible. Unfortunately alot of people with base consoles will feel cheated. I am playing on PS5 and it brute forces the PS4 version and it runs well and is more than playable, minus some glitches... Make no mistake. No game should be launched in such a mixed state over various platforms.

Dirt 5 first and foremost is a fun and exciting racer that has hints of Motorstorm, Drive Club and Onrush. Its fast, frantic and good for short bursts. If playing on SX enable VRR on SX settings and of course you need a TV that has this option...

Best Crash game yet. A big step up technically. Although linear in design it suits perfectly the game style . 60fps on Pro. Silky movement. Variety. Lots of levels..great audio and solid gameplay. Far out performed my expectations. Gameplay nods towards Donkey Kong Country.
