What a disappointment. Take one of my new favorite horror series, and turn it into a co-op Gears of War with microtransactions. There's not much nice I can say about this game. The environment and enemy design I decent I guess, and the side quest feature adds appreciated lore. Unfortunately, this military shooter has nothing scary about it. This game is incredibly easy on even hard difficulties, sapping all tension and fear from the monsters, and the modding system only makes it worse. You can make ridiculously unbalanced weapons, I beat Dead Space 3 on the hardest difficulty using a single weapon the entire playthrough. And the story. It legitimately feel like the writers used the TV Tropes site as a reference. Dead Space 1 had this problem, but 3 blows it up to the max, even ripping off other EA properties for their main antagonists. And despite 3 having way more characters than any previous entry, not a single one am I left with positive impressions, even pre existing characters get ruined. Maybe buy this if it's extremely cheap and you want a game to mess around with your friends on, but don't go in expecting a satisfying sequel or horror game.
Wow, I was not expecting this to surpass the original. I'm usually not a fan of remakes, however Motive has perfectly captured the feel of Dead Space while managing to add new things. Many elements from Dead Space 2 are added here, such as zero-g flight and deeper weapon modding paths. They've even managed to add one of the few elements of Dead Space 3 I liked, the side quests, which add so much depth to the story, to the point where the end of one made me tear up. One of the weak elements from the first they've definitely improved on is the characters. What were once horror stereotypes are now much more fleshed out. Nicole, Isaac, Kendra, Mercer are all given depth they never really received in the original. In short, it's going to be hard to tell people to play the original with this game on the market, even with the price tag.
My favorite game of all time. I honestly have a hard time of thinking of substantial flaws with this game. The games story is excellent, going for a more episodic feel rather than the blockbuster movie feel of the original. If choice heavy rpgs are your jam, this is the game for you. So much of what you do ties into one of the best video game endings of all time, truly life or death decisions. The combat has also vastly been improved, and the character building has been simplified, but to a healthy degree where you don't feel like you have to invest in useless abilities. The games characters are also some of Biowares best. Characters you start out hating become fan favorites, and returning characters get much more depth than they ever got in the original. The game also has a decent variety in side quests, from hub quests, to vehicle quests, to combat quests. If you're looking for a good sci-fi rpg, you won't find a better one.
While not a terrible game, a rather rough start to an otherwise amazing trilogy of games. The game has an amazing world and lore, and the main story (while somewhat uninspired) is rather solid. However, many of the games characters are rather dull for a Bioware game, and many of the games choices only have an effect in later games in the series. The character building is a bit of a mess, and the third person combat is genuinely bad. While there is a decent variety of side quests, the environments of many of them are copy paste, and some boil down to collectathon quests. Again, not a bad game. However, it genuinely feels like a prologue to more interesting adventures down the road.
