This game is deceptively bad. On the surface it seems like a fun, unique, co-op, rpg fun game. In reality however it’s pretty awful. Be ready to die repeatedly and start over and over and OVER. Sudden deaths to little pixels on a screen you couldn’t see, useless backgrounds for characters, and always seeming to get screwed by RNG. But don’t worry! If the ring doesn’t screw you the game will! Accidentally set off a trap you couldn’t see a slight pixel color difference in?! Hurray death! Start all over! Tons of hidden mechanics never explained like “how to pick things up” or what half of any of the stuff actually does!
The Devs really dropped the ball here with making difficulty over enjoyment, just for sake of being a “hard game.” No one is ever on the servers and it’s no wonder this game stinks at the most important thing. Being a fun game to play!
This game appears great at first.
With all the rouge like appeared and coop its seems like a fun beat em up with friends, till you encounter the horrendous difficulty and terrible combat. Losing all progress every run, terrible difficult spikes( just enemy giant boost in damage and health, not skill) unlocks changing absolutely nothing, it’s no wonder most of the positive reviews are from 5 minute players. This game could be good with some sort of keep progress, an easier mode, and set character load outs. The RNG makes it unbearable for playstyle and progress( another fake difficulty modifier) and when you actually do try to progress to stage 5 after beating all 4 other stages in a row, the difficulty jumps enormously again and you have to start all the way from the start! Lots of lame, boring, repetitive, overly difficult gameplay. This could have been an awesome little gem, but it falls horribly short epically after a few hours of trying to make it worth playing!
This game is in a word “inconsistent.” The game mechanics have plenty of hidden features including certain clothing changing mechanics. Certain items of clothing absolutely do more damage than others, but again, not of it is stated anywhere. Not in tutorials or anything. The game is extremely inconsistent and janky on controls and response. They’re will be times where when knocked out, you can get up immediately 1 knockout. Other times for some reason or another it doesn’t work 1 knockout, and other players will get up immediately after 3-4 knockout. There is no consistency. Don’t take this s*it serious because it will just make you angry. Lazy dev programming keeps this from being anything other than a major time waster if you’re more than 5 years old.
I wanted to like this game, but I honestly just can’t. It’s way too boring and pointless. Even simplistic things are annoying as hell to do. It feels more like I’m paying bills than playing an enjoyable cRPG. There’s no excitement in the plot or the actions or much really. It’s all bloated nonsense that leaves you feeling awful for paying money to play this so you keep going. - the plot is predictable, too serious, badly written and yet overwritten somehow. There’s so much pointless dialogue and characters and choices that I was wishing someone would just play it for me to get it over with. Trust me your better off just reading a book. - gameplay is tedious and underwhelming, while being plot breaking buggy even at the time of this review. Camping is pointless and stupid, I don’t want to hear these lame nobodies do caphero quips everytime I have to stop to rest… which is about every 2 MINUTES! There is also something called an abyssal corruption mechanic which is pointless, and annoying. The pacing on this game is horrendous. If you don’t have mods don’t play this. - combat is altogether boring and extremely complicated for no reason. Most attacks and spells do the same thing but have a different name. All the combat overall should have been modernized and balanced in much greater detail, but when you have a 150 CLASSES FOR NO REASON then it’s impossible. The original PlayStation ff7 has more interesting combat. - sound design is good and the music is good. It’s just overshadowed by all the other bad parts. Voice acting when present occasionally is mostly good, while cheesy. It’s still good. Overall would not recommend this game, it has the appearance of freedom while being horribly boring and linear. I would look to pillars of eternity or divinity for a satisfactory cRPG.
This game **** eggs. Plain and simple this is a terrible game that should have never been released. First off it’s not Ben 10, it’s Ben 6. There’s not 10 aliens in a game literally named Ben 10! This game ****! Second, there’s tons of bugs that there is no way around at all. I got trapped is some BS water trap and the game kept reloading me into the infinite restart death restart loop. What the crap man, seriously!? I had to delete my data and restart the game because the bugs are so bad. And there’s tons of these bugs everywhere especially in two player mode. And 2 player mode **** too. In 2 player mode Kevin can even get like 10 feet away before he gets teleported back to Ben and often he’s dropped into oblivion infinite restart loop that you can’t even pause. It just breaks and it’s awful.plus to even start 2 player mode you have to go to the dumb rust bucket to start it. Why not just turn it on in the options it’s just plain idiotic. And to the find the duct bucket is a chore because the mini map is broken too! It doesn’t even display anything. What the crap! This game ****. The graphics look awful. It’s like someone threw up colors all over the screen and turned forgot to turn off the terrible office lighting in the basement. It looks that trash. And there’s some void realm garabage that looks like pink vomit, that’s a major part of story progression. And you would think with these awful graphics the frame rate would be good right? No. It’s garbage also. It’s always dropping in and out and 2 player mode kills resolution of the game. It’s junk. I’ll sum it up with a list here 1. Graphics ****
2. Ben 6, not Ben 10 so the reason to play the game ****.
3. Mini map doesn’t work but still eats up screen space.
4. 2 player mode **** and crashes a lot and it’s extremely inconvenient to start. 5. Game breaking bugs like death loops will make you possibly have to delete data and restart long mindless missions.
6. It loads like garbage and the frame rate drops all the time.
7. Sound! I forgot sound just like they did. Cartoon Network needs to fire thier audio engineers. This sounds like garbage. No hit sounds, no attack landing sounds. You don’t even know what’s happening because it’s silent in combat.
8. Combat ****, it’s just the same copy pasted enemies with different colors. This includes bosses! It’s exactly the same every time!
I could go on, don’t buy this get a refund this game is broken and runs, sounds and looks like garbage. This game is crap and should never have been released.
Mortal shell is another example **** with amazing potential but a lackluster finish. Mortal shell is basically a dark souls clone in its feel, controls, difficulty and dark atmosphere. However this is its downfall as well as the other titles that attempt to clone the dark souls formula.
Whenever anyone attempts to clone dark souls they run into an amazing inevitable error in creating a game, THE TITLE WILL BE ALWAYS BE COMPARED TO DARK SOULS. Competing with from soft is like trying to defeat the iPhone of video games. I mean seriously you’re literally competing or comparing yourself to the greatest series of all time **** the thing is when you do that unless you 100% understand the formula and vision of Miyazaki it’s going to always fall short, and mortal shell does that in many ways. I need to say bravo for attempting to make this game, it’s not easy to create and it turned out fairly good game given the team and devs, but it does deserve some critique. And I hope they continue on to find their groove in the gaming world. Problems
1. Variety- This is non existent essentially there are only 4 player types and 4 weapons and they all handle to same with each different shell type. To me this is a big blunder because so much of the game is meaningless and it requires players to give it meaning. They can’t do that when they are unable to express the character in their play-style. 2. Loot- Most items and skills or anything are not worth getting for any reason. Having to fight enemies in this game is extremely annoying and slogging your way through them only to get a healing item that heals for 1% of your total health, ITS POINTLESS. Also the items have zero information about them till you use them, which sounds interesting in theory but they cause effects you don’t want, like changing weapons or something else lame like that. 3. Combat- This is by far the worst characteristic of this game. Almost everything you do is based around a bad combat system. The A.I is idiotic, the enemies are way too damaging even the scrubs, hits don’t connect when they obviously should, certain enemies have a stupid animation that can’t be avoided. Poise is broken and completely inconsistent. Using what looks like the heaviest weapon possible does not stun enemies in the middle of an animation even with a fully charged hard hit. Attacks from enemies can hurt you even after they have completed with point of momentum, meaning and enemy swings his weapon- you dodge- move back in too fast and still get hit. This also works terrible after getting your second chance to revive. Enemies already finished with their swing can whenever it’s convenient finish the attack and the frames still get you resulting in a crappy cheap death. All enemies are stronger than the player even when it makes no sense. Basically any scrub with a hammer in a few hits can kill your character in a full armor set empowered with the wrath of 10,000 sun gods. It doesn’t make sense that a homeless man outside of Walmart can easily kill the spawn of Satan. Parry skill is horrible.
This is very, very inconsistent and this is coming from someone who beat Sekiro with room to spare. The party mechanic is also broken, it doesn’t fire when you press the button but other times fires too early and who can be parried or what can be parried is completely inconsistent.
And given that this is the primary way of regaining health(WHY?) it makes it extremely frustrating to play the game to completion. Final thoughts
I feel like this game could be much better and grander if it stopped trying to fit into the dark souls universe! There is plenty enough merit on its own to be its own worthy title but the desperation in trying to be the next “dark souls clone” prevents it from being really good. Dark souls has plenty of things that do not deserve to be repeated in another title. Sekiro proved that in its fresh take and won game of the year! If you’re looking for something to scratch that dark souls itch, imo this is not it. It’s better to just go and replay the titles you know and love with mods or a new character or something.
This is worth a try though at its price point but don’t be shocked at the glaring problems when compared to a from soft title. Congrats to the studio though on their bravery in trying to make DS clone with that small team.
The takeaway here though is players don’t care about the process they care about the product and the magic it can bring.
