It feel like no time has passed since our last visit to Neptune, Calif. ... At no point in the eight episodes did it feel like series creator Rob Thomas had run out of story.

"Veronica" doesn't pretend it's still 2004. She's a thirty-something woman who still works her high-school job, and there's no pretending it's glamorous. And for this genre, and this character, the themes of wasted potential and existential angst fit perfectly.

To me, the question or premise of season 4 was, could veronica Mars continue on as she was in her small town? The answer was yes, but not without consequences and finally processing the tragedies in her life. As usual, it's a show ahead of it's time.

Veronica is back, as prickly, vengeful and noirish as ever, and television—or at least streaming services—is a more wonderfully crime-ridden place for it.

[Veronica is] at the top of her game in a clever mystery that some fans may feel take one twist too many. Still, let's hope we haven't seen the last of this fabulous character. [22 Jul - 4 Aug 2019, p.6]

The best Veronica has been since its 2004 debut.

Has its moments, but the whole story drags, especially in the first half. There’s just not a good enough mystery at the heart of this season to justify eight episodes.

There are a few new characters that are life preservers in this murky swamp of uninteresting plots.

I haven't watched any previous VM stuff, but I heard about this being on Hulu so I decided to give it a shot. Honestly, the main problem to me is that the story is simply not interesting enough to last eight episodes. There's too much lazy filler -- useless party/drinking scenes, side-plots that I don't remotely care about, unnecessary amounts of B-grade banter. Veronica is entirely unlikeable, which I doubt is supposed to be the case given how passionate the fanbase is. On the other hand, solid performances from Enrico Colantoni and Izabela Vidovic were refreshing to see. There were a few captivating scenes, but overall just not enough. I expected it to be better, based on the hype.

The character of Veronica was missing her marshmallow center this season. She had no time for her best friend, barely paid attention to her father's faltering health, mocked her long-term boyfriend for going to therapy, and ultimately became the villain in her own story. Her character arc was confusing given where she was after the Veronica Mars movie and subsequent books, and the lack of continuity was jarring. I may have accepted the regression of her personality if it had been explained on screen, but it wasn't. As for the mystery, it was very weak, and the pacing was slow. It was not enough to fill eight hours of story. There were some logic fails and plot holes, which aren't necessarily noticeable on first viewing because the writers tried to throw a lot of things into the mix to confuse and distract, but with a little thought you can see the glaring errors. Additionally, Veronica Mars is supposed to be a brilliant detective, but she hardly does any investigative work, and she is literally dumbed-down by the writers in order to make the final "twist" happen. As for that final twist, it is disappointing that it was merely tacked on for shock value. It wasn't essential to the plot of the story and it reduced what was already a lackluster season into something unwatchable.

Definitely a bait and switch for a VM spin-off w/o everything that made the show great. Bye VM
