In sanding down some of the edges, the show has lost some of its urgency – along with its sense of dread about the state of the world. .... But it now feels like a drama that appreciates that no catastrophe is as compelling as one driven by intimate, human stories.

It’s perfectly functional as a series, I’m just not sure I have the patience.

The series kicks into gear around halfway through as we learn the mole’s identity, backstory and motivation. This is engrossing in a way that the cyber stuff isn’t.

This has more zip than the previous effort in contrasting Saara’s GCHQ work with her life as a young British Muslim, which was another element of season one that never got off the ground. But The Undeclared War is still scrabbling around for something that will compensate for the digital age’s cold wars being essentially action-free.
