The terrific thing about the new season, starting with the introduction of Weaver [Laura Innes], is that personalities on ER have become as complicated and messy as brain surgery.

Gripping ... It sure gets off to a spine-tingling, heart-pounding start. [19 Sep 1994]

It's probably the most realistic fictional treatment of the medical profession TV has ever presented. The pace is furious, the narrative jagged and unsettling.

Crichton ... has infused "E.R." with a contemporary, darkly humorous believability. [18 Sep 1994]

The emergency sequences are pure adrenaline rush, but the drama, romance and humor ladled into the lull periods are pretty hackneyed.

From week to week, it's as if the characters are being made up on the spot, without reference to pasts with which fans are very familiar. ... Storytelling here has suffered as well.

My absolute favorite all time medical drama. 12 amazing seasons. You follow John Carter as he makes his was as first a surgeon then a emergency medical doctor. As well as all the wacky patient's that come through the door.

There is little doubt that ER was the best medical drama during the 1990's - 2000's. Just like NYPD Blue broke down the nudity barrier on the little screen, ER broke the barrier for the amount of blood and gore that could be shown on prime-time TV. Audiences responded immediately to ER’s fast paced action scenes as well as the original’s cast sympathetic and compelling characters. ER quickly became a fan favorite and the top drama during its first several years on NBC. Not only did the show keep audience captivated, but it also turned many faithful watchers into adrenalin junkies with the use of unique camera angles that offered firsthand views of doctors and nurses saving and losing lives on the operating table. Another element of storytelling that kept viewers coming back was the show’s focus on the lives of its doctors and nurses outside the ER. Over the seasons, ER showcased the backstories of its best loved and least liked characters which made for top-notch, three-dimensional story telling. Not only was the onscreen talent exceptional (especial during the first 8 seasons) but ER’s writers were responsible for showcasing some of the very best dramatic storytelling on network TV. Granted, ER was growing a little long in the tooth by the end of the 11th season but during the last four years there continued to be some actors and plot lines worth viewing.
