Confidently building its world, Domina’s makers will perhaps have had one eye on the Game of Thrones demographic. But while any TV drama about ancient Rome wouldn’t be complete without lashings of sex, unlike GoT, this didn’t feel specifically crafted for the male gaze.

Ms. Parkes is quite affecting and attractive and convinces us there is steel beneath the pampered exterior of the empress-to-be. ... Viewers might want to break out the XXL togas, because “Domina” does run a bit hot, and certainly fierce.

Parkes’s forceful presence just about got the first two instalments over the line. Yet for all the gore and the romping, this was still a cheesy swords-and-sandals caper – more Wake Me Up Before You Toga than Edward Gibbon’s Decline and Fall.

Garbage. What could have been a neat follow-up to Rome (though I can't for the life of me understand why you wouldn't want to make Augustus the leading figure) turns out to be historical points a la Sparticus. If you want to watch pork, fine, but please stop trying to pass it off as historical fiction. And what happened in episode 3?! Did the whole cast die in a crash?
