This is subtle, masterful storytelling, superbly allied with nail-biting, at times almost unbearable, drama.

Blue Lights puts a bit of soapy froth on difficult subject matter: arguably a show that was fully committed to its own harsh reality wouldn’t find time for such indulgence, but it is rather lovely. And, as Blue Lights pivots to deal with awfulness that’s bang up to date, it’s sharp enough.

Within minutes of the first episode of the fourth series it was showing its class again when a protest against asylum seekers in Belfast turned horribly violent.

A slow burn, this most definitely isn’t. But once the dust settles, the plot pivots, and what initially looks like a discourse about asylum morphs somewhat awkwardly into something else entirely: a story about the consequences of being exposed.
