In a way the film’s best bits are the quiet scenes where the audience is primed to expect something awful is about to happen, only to find the point is not a jump scare but a harrowing emotional insight.

They Live in the Grey is a modest indie with thematic layers and evergreen mortal dread that could use two or three more editing bay passes.

A somber film, can't deny that, and that's one of its best qualities, however, it's a somber film that implies that its job wasn't to attempt anything different and thus it never ventures into unfamiliar or exciting terrains.
It's the kind of horror where you know all the tricks, even if its approach decided to go down a more emotional route into depression.
