Indeed, Goyer has penned many scripts superior to this one (he co-wrote cult gem Dark City), but he does make sure you're never far away from a big "Boo!"

For as long as it forges ahead without explanations, The Unborn works, in its way, as a series of snap-cut gotchas introducing each new contestant in its pageant of cold-sweat set pieces.

Whereas Japanese horror movies have been criticized for not making sense, The Unborn errs on the opposite extreme, coming off all the more ridiculous for over-explaining itself.

What finally undoes the struggle to maintain suspense is Goyer's dialogue, which is consistently hokey.

Mostly, though, the movie is something of a snooze, a gabby PG-13 horror flick whose most shocking image might be the bored look on Gary Oldman's face as he goes through the motions of playing the rabbi in charge of dispatching the film's damnable demon to somewhere over hell's rainbow.

Calling The Unborn a dull, plodding, exposition-crammed slog through a twilight of barely maintained tedium is like calling "Valkyrie" a yawn. It's too easy.

Boston Globe
The Unborn joins a growing glut of Holocaust- and Nazi-themed material -- "Valkyrie," "Defiance" - that are long on posturing, suppositions, and righteousness, yet short on moral complexity. Nazism and its crimes have lately inspired theme parks more than actual movies. Too many rides on that roller coaster and I feel sick.

The simulacrum created in the film is not bad. The exposition of the film tries to confuse audience or make the story looks more complicated, but at the end of the film it shows a poor resolution without proper linkage to the start.

The Unborn is a dreadfully unimaginative and dull jump-scare horror that looks great but has zero substance. It’s not that it's a badly made film, it’s just creatively empty with nothing notable. It’s a very pretty film with pretty people and pretty images that actually become distracting making it hard to focus or engage with the characters and the film. You stop caring what happens and idly ride it out. Maybe that was the idea as the film itself is devoid of any real depth so looking pretty and some boring jumpscares are all that it has. It utilises every unimaginative trope of the exorcism and ghost genre. The direction is unimaginative and sometimes misguided. I think that if the casting of the lead actress was different then it could have been much more engaging, it’s not that she’s a bad actress, it’s just that she is not right for the role. It’s a challenging role that if she had been better cast would have carried the film. I really didn’t like the ending either, it wasn’t a complete story.

You'll have a couple of jump, goosebumps and spooky moments here and there sure, but the movie is mostly a dumb mess without any redeeming quality to it, bad dialogue and bad acting for the most part.
