And while it’s sometimes fun to shout at the screen—don’t drink that tea!—the speed with which the filmmakers dangle and then defuse various loaded scenarios eventually creates its own frustrating pattern. So while “The Truthers” isn’t a deconstruction of the genre, it does repeatedly deny viewers the formulaic pleasures that it promises.

The Truthers is a peculiar **** I do not necessarily mean that as **** begins with an appealing idea: using conspiracy thinking, a world where any fact can become evidence and every contradiction can confirm that somebody is hiding something, to build both a thriller and a family **** quite a while, it works.Roger Gual creates an interesting uncertainty when Ruth returns to a father from whom she has become estranged and discovers a man completely consumed by his theories. The problem is that some of the things he says sound completely absurd.Others do not. That is where the film becomes most **** far are we dealing with someone who has lost contact with reality? And what happens when, among a hundred ridiculous ideas, one may actually contain something worth examining? The film handles that discomfort effectively without immediately telling us who is right.Much of that works because of Stéphanie **** me, she is clearly the best thing in The Truthers.Ruth has to become our way into the story: suspicious, irritated, frightened and eventually uncertain about whether what seemed obvious might not be so simple. Magnin handles that progression very well and carries sections that could otherwise feel much more **** has **** the more the story depends on her, the better it becomes.José Coronado almost creates the opposite **** is good, because Coronado is unlikely to be bad in this kind of role. He has the voice, presence and ability to make even a relatively ordinary sentence sound potentially **** he is **** premise seems to offer him an excellent character: a conspiracy-obsessed father whose claims we are never quite sure how seriously to take. There was enormous potential for ambiguity and **** film never fully exploits it.That is a shame.Whenever Magnin and Coronado share the screen, I find the film much more interesting: not so much as an investigation, but as the story of a daughter trying to discover who her father really is and whether she can still trust **** conspiracy angle is also **** live surrounded by people capable of combining videos, online posts and coincidences until they create an alternative explanation for reality. The Truthers understands that mechanism and occasionally makes us begin looking at certain details differently **** problem is that it does not always know what to do with all the possibilities it creates. Some threats are introduced and resolved too quickly. Other ideas seem to promise far more than they eventually **** as the ending approaches, some of the early uncertainty disappears. That weakens the film.Because uncertainty was the most interesting **** police investigation is also less compelling than the conflict between father and daughter. Whenever the film moves toward more familiar thriller mechanics, it loses some of the strangeness that made it distinctive.Perhaps that is the main problem with The Truthers: its central idea is more interesting than the film ultimately built around it.Still, I would not call it **** is unusual, uneven and could have done much more with Coronado and with its own premise, but it remains watchable and interesting enough to maintain curiosity.Above all, it has Stéphanie **** makes Ruth more than a conventional protagonist investigating strange events. She becomes someone trapped between what she knows, what she believes and what she increasingly fears might be **** a film about believers, perhaps that is exactly what matters.

The Devastating Burden of Manufactured Conviction in an Age of Unchecked Information.260801 (2.2)As always, the truth does not matter. In an era overflowing with information where there is no clear way to discern fake news from reality, we simply bear the responsibility for the beliefs we choose. The problem is that the weight of that choice and the intensity of that responsibility are absurdly immense. The film begins through Ruth's perspective. At first, the audience looks negatively upon her father, who belongs to the minority group of believers. However, learning that he is a retired military police veteran, that her mother felt deeply lonely after Ruth stepped away from her promising swimming career, and that a fellow ex-soldier shared her father's convictions—solidifying their collective identity as believers—causes some viewers to detach from Ruth's point of view. With the truth behind Alejandro's abduction revealed alongside the bombing and deaths among the believers, viewers eventually swing back around to realize that Ruth was right all along, only to be thrown into confusion once more by the massive crowds of believers pouring out onto the streets. It is reality itself. It is a bit regrettable, however, that the closing pace felt abruptly hurried.
