The Surrender accomplishes a lot with a sketch-sized story and matching compositional agility and precision. It’s short (less than 90 minutes!) and sweet and the best kind of upsetting.

Kudos to Max for conjuring genuinely unsettling, Boschian images with a limited budget.

Underneath the savage occult aspects of the story remains a constant exploration of what it means to see your loved ones as flawed, rounded humans, and ultimately as mortal.

Despite a passionate performance from Colby Minifie and some compelling visuals, The Surrender sidelines its deft exploration of grief for drawn-out, pointless supernatural horror.

The Surrender attempts to blend family drama with supernatural horror but struggles with pacing and narrative cohesion. While the performances convey genuine emotional weight, the film’s slow build and abrupt shift to occult rituals lack sufficient development, resulting in a disjointed experience. The unresolved ending further detracts from its impact, leaving viewers dissatisfied. Despite its ambitions, the film falls short of delivering a compelling thriller.
