In exploring the issues that were and are involved, the film goes far deeper, as it were, than the seagoing Cold War caper thriller it naturally wants to be.

Neither Confirm Nor Deny plays like a Tom Clancy thriller and opens a little-known door in American history.

That Neither Confirm Nor Deny doesn’t ignore the wider controversies of the CIA is welcome . . . But at heart, this is a heist saga designed to enthrall in its ingenuity and ambition, one of the more presentable cases of cowboy spycraft from an us-versus-them time.

As we’re reminded in the background here, the ’60s and ’70s were not exactly glorious years for covert operations by operatives of the U.S. government. This plot, though, was about as morally defensible as they come.

The story assembles before our eyes like an illustration in a manual for superspies.

You may feel differently, but for me the DVD was boredom in a box. Don't expect this documentary to be a "thriller" about some wild, outrageous government plot. It was a colorless recounting of a rather uninteresting mission. You'll be disappointed if you expect anything more. Also, the moralizing spirit of the Seventies is laughable now. Government pulls the wool over our eyes in even more outrageous ways today.
