So the script and the performances aren't exactly Oscar material, but it scarcely matters given that the real stars here are the ILM-created dinosaurs, a miracle of modern moviemaking.
I hadn't watched this movie in a very, very long time. I decided to rewatch it to kick off watching he entire series, and I was honestly blown away and impressed. This film still holds up to this day, even in 2025. I remember as a kid falling in love with dinosaurs, and many of my friends did too, all because of this movie. I especially remember the Jurassic Park fighting game, where you were dinosaurs fighting each other. This is peak cinema.
Spielberg's scary and horrific thriller may be one-dimensional and even clunky in story and characterization, but definitely delivers where it counts, in excitement, suspense and the stupendous realization of giant reptiles.
Perfectly passable kiddie escapism. It has a thrill or two, and a chill or three, but it has no poetry, little sense of wonder, no resonant subtext (Jungian or otherwise), no art... When it's over, it's gone. Extinct.
I think I must have seen it wrong ... it says 68 critic score here?!!! ... This movie belongs on the list of films debated as the best in history. It’s a milestone in cinema, and I don’t say that just because it’s my favorite and I watch it religiously — it’s simply a work of ****’s a film I could watch until I die and never get bored, and every time I see it, I notice a new detail and get as excited as I did when I was a kid. I’ll say it again: this is one of the greatest movies in history, period. A masterpiece by Spielberg.
Definitely a bit overrated, but still watchable. The movie was boring and slow but finally caught up to all the hype. It's worth watching if you just want to see crazy dinosaurs killing humans in gruesome ways.
The main problem I had with jurassic park is that it doesn't live up to the incredibly high calibre of the cast and crew. Actors like sam neill and samuel l jackson are stuck in a simplistic action film with not much going for it. Don't get me wrong, steven spielberg brings his directing flair elevating this above your average monster film but the sub par script doesn't allow for character development with wayne knights character being a laughably stupid character. For that matter its nice to see that spielberg sticks to the convention that all characters in a monster movie are remarkably dumb. Overall the movie can provide long moments of tension and some great set pieces but not much else.
They handle genetic science to brew dinosaurs, but they didn't manage to create separate security system! And whole facility was controller by ONE stereotypical nerd software engineer! If you somehow connected to science or engineering, I do not recommend watching this movie.
