Drop succeeds by blending classic thriller elements with modern tech paranoia, anchored by strong performances and sharp direction. It’s a tense, engaging ride that keeps viewers guessing until the very end.

It’s the kind of film that not only makes for a great theatrical experience but will also make you want to watch it again immediately afterward to see what you missed the first time.

Drop gets the job done, and even throws in an excellent cocktail-piano rendition of “Baby Shark.” Go see it on a first date, if you’re brave.

This expertly-done B movie plunges breakout star Meghann Fahy into one of the scariest situations ever—a first date. The dude (Brandon Sklenar) is a charmer, yet her phone keeps buzzing with text messages to kill him. Hang on for a nerve-jangling ride.

Drop works best in its nimblest moments, but ultimately we should have nothing but gratitude for a movie that has almost zero bloat and tells an effective, original story in 90 minutes, even if this sleek package is made up of some shopworn tropes.

So far I’ve yet to see any movie figure out how to integrate the dull activity of staring at a small black rectangle into something worthy of the screen. Landon’s approach looks a bit too much like a billboard or a meme, but I think he’s on the right track to be trying something expressionistic that circles back around to silent-movie aesthetics.

The absurd plot twists in “Drop,” might be tolerable if the film weren’t so distastefully tethered to domestic violence.

Having already brilliantly proven his mastery of horror comedies (with the excellent Freaky and Happy Death Day), Christopher Landon adds another string to his bow and shows us that he can perfectly direct a thriller! Intense, suspenseful, and just the right length, he creates an anxious atmosphere in barely 1h30. An almost perfect film (it’s just a bit technologically surreal, but let’s overlook that)!

Although it is repetitious, contrived and ultimately ridiculous, Drop held my interest until the end. It’s nowhere near as good as the thrillers it emulates. It’s a trashy potboiler heavy on style. Mildly recommended. detroitcineaste
