Crimson Peak's atmosphere crackles with sexual passion and dark secrets. There are a couple of monsters (supernatural and human), but the gigantic emotions are the most terrifying thing onscreen.

Hauntingly Beautiful Gothic Romance
Guillermo del Toro is a director and artist whose films fall into two distinct categories: big budget English language blockbusters like "Hellboy" and "Pacific Rim" and lesser known, low budget Spanish language horror films like "Devil's Backbone" and "Pan's Labyrinth". Starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain and Tom Hiddleston comes this wonderfully dark and original gothic romance. Exceptionally creepy although borderline excessively gory with the perfect atmosphere throughout. More importantly it doesn't rely on cheap jump scares that other ghost stories bombard you with. I loved every minute of this, by far Guillermo del Torro's best English language film, a must see for anyone who's a fan of his work. Highly recommended.

Del Toro’s predictably impeccable production design and tonal flourishes help bring the film to life, aided by strong performances from his leads, especially Jessica Chastain, who gives the otherwise reverent proceedings just the right amount of jolt.

A ghost story in which superior camerawork, costumes and production design work together to put the audience in a trance. It's tough on actors not to get swallowed up in the scenery.

Chastain, Wasikowska, and Hiddleston do their best, but the writing of “Crimson Peak“ comes off far more slight than Del Toro’s previous work. It lives in the shadow of similar films, but with a far more unrelieved energy. Del Toro and Robbins eventually find a groove, but by the time that occurs, it’s far too late.

Crimson Peak, mas allá de su cruda violencia o de su excelente fotografía, su bello vestuario o su increíble sonido o diseño de arte, es una película con elementos clásicos del cine de terror y horror original. El cine de terror de estos tiempos se a vuelto simple, mediocre y estúpido, se caracteriza por tener screamers poco originales y muy gastados acompañados de una historia sin sentido y aburrida. Pero en esta ocasión, Guillermo Del Toro retorna al horror clásico de una manera espectacular y sutil, no hace falta que un fantasma aparezca enfrente de la pantalla ridículamente con un grito acompañado para causar terror (Hola Actividad Paranormal), Crimson Peak juega con el sonido y el ambiente (Spoiler) "Aquella escena del pasillo en donde el fantasma sale del suelo es espectacular y terrorífica a la vez" La imaginación de Del Toro es brillante y el diseño de los fantasmas (así como los efectos visuales) son únicos y excelentes. Considero que esta película no es del todo "terror" pues tiene romance, misterio y suspenso y horror. Es una perfecta combinación entre la imaginación de Del Toro con una historia de misterio al mas puro estilo de Alfred Hitchcock.

Despite its solid cast and rich references, it's nothing more than just a mediocre gothic romance. Stephen King commented that the movie was "majestic and very scary", interesting. It’s true that the genre of the movie isn't just horror. However, it must be admitted that it is very difficult for many reasons to treat fear as a theme and as a theme today. In a very superficial summary; In the early examples of cinema history, themes such as religion, psychology, etc. were used as an element of fear, and it was successful. Then, with the development of technology, visual effects integrated into the world of the movies, the first time it was used, it succeeded to create a scary atmosphere, yes, but then the audience got used to it and not effected by it anymore.
In the end, neither the visual effects nor the themes could be turned into an element of horror alone. Now the success of an horror movie (if we just look at it superficially from the eye of the spectator) is able to blend each element in moderation and with a very solid plot (an example worth watching: It Follows (2014)). Also to use up-to-date elements that can directly appeal to perception.
