From visuals to music, it’s a top-tier anime movie. It invites viewers in from the start with colorful settings and stunning character designs. There is a subtle poetic tone, too, in linking the culturally foundational tale of Kaguya-hime to the coming-of-age story of a girl living in modern Japan.

The plot pings about hyperactively, so dizzying that Cosmic Princess Kaguya! may leave audiences over 15 years old feeling more ancient than the original tale.

Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is blessed with talent—manifesting as impressive animation and a lovely rapport between its leads—but its rocky landing denies it a chance at true stardom.

It is undeniably entertaining on a purely visual level. The flashy animation and attractive character designs are the strengths this work puts forward, and in many ways, they are its only real appeal. For me, however, that was all it had to offer. The story leans heavily on clichés and feels unoriginal, and the developments in the latter half come across as forced to the point of being jarring.I think this work was overly ambitious. During promotion, it emphasized a high quality OST built around Vocaloid and seemed to promise a reinterpretation of Vocaloid in animated form. What we actually got, however, was an awkwardly unfocused anime that failed to fully commit to any of its ideas. The stage performances I had looked forward to felt stiff and lacked excitement, while the action game segments that appear throughout were simply long and hollow. I could not help but think it would have been better to abandon those sections altogether and focus more on advancing the **** the end, the series tries to generate appeal by mixing Vocaloid, action, mythology, and pure romance all at once, but due to a lack of executional skill, I believe it ultimately fails.Looking at it more generously, it does manage to meet expectations to a certain degree. The animation is extremely stable and visually appealing, and every character is designed with a distinct personality. Given the large budget and manpower involved, this result may be expected, but even so, this aspect can be considered a clear success. That said, the weaknesses in direction and storytelling are significant. Judging the story on its own, it is fairly solid up until the midpoint. By using the tale of The Bamboo Cutter as its foundation and following the original legend almost beat for beat, it manages to progress without major issues. Even this approach feels somewhat disappointing, but it is still far better than what **** latter half rushes forward at an overwhelming pace. Major twists that should have delivered a strong emotional impact are introduced too quickly and without enough care, completely deflating their effect. While the foreshadowing is technically there, the narrative lacks persuasive power. The ending also deserves mention. For a story that constantly proclaims the pursuit of a happy ending, the conclusion felt far too contrived to be convincing. I think it would have been better to commit to a twist and wrap things up in a cleaner, more decisive way.Overall, I would rate this work as average at best. If you are simply looking for an anime to casually pass the time, it is not a bad choice. But if the question is whether this is a genuinely good piece of storytelling, I would say it is not. Its flaws are clear, and so are its strengths. It did not resonate with me, but I can see how it might still resonate with someone else.
