The conclusion of Astrakan is a riveting, almost revelatory experience that is vastly different from anything seen prior. It may be hard to digest for some, but it adds additional layers to the motion picture and colors the events in a completely new light.

The result is an engrossing exercise in empathetic humanism, unhurried and uninflected; the various sections of the film are divided by ruminative fades to black.

The director of Astrakan is David Depesseville (frankly just a touch too close to Depressville for comfort). Astrakhan is his first film and suggests something of a stylistic calling card, not least at film’s close: a late flurry of exposition and offcuts that are less in service of plot or character or even mood and more an artist showing what else they can do. It’s not entirely a turn-off.

This is an extraordinary film, remarkable in its subtlety and power. The style could be termed “magical realism” but the magical aspect is only hinted at throughout most of the film until the film crescendos in a way so devastating that I felt punched and breathless. I have been amazed at how many viewers see the film only through a usual realistic lens and thus miss the whole point and the film’s raw exposure of our lack of humanity.
