The movie is bursting at the seams, as if Choi, in his first outing since the 2015 historical action drama “Assassination,” was drunk on pure filmmaking pleasure and threw every cinematic genre into a gigantic blender.

The sheer too-much-ness of Alienoid could have easily been wearying, given its many tangents and supporting characters. Thankfully, writer/director Choi Dong-hoon confirms his hitmaker reputation by balancing over-inflated set pieces with disarming screwball comedy and delightful character actor performances.

Watchable TV if you have already seen Attraction (2017) The top three pro Metacritic reviews get it right also. The must-see movie of this genre is Fyodor Bondachuk's 2017 Russian movie, Attraction. It's on many streaming platforms. The 2022 Korean Alienoid seems inspired by Attraction. What Alienoid has going for it is very good on-set morale; it's fun. Its verve, snappy dialogue, committed acting and stunts and lots of creative scenes make it watchable TV. The VFX are stellar. The middle part of Alienoid is a Terminator vs. Terminator battle in a city with impeccable post-production values. There's also a Mission Impossible stunt **** with many foreign sci-fi and fantasy movies, even with very committed acting as you have here, a series of action scenes strung together, does not add up to a blockbuster. To really pop, the characters have to have an arc of development which fuels their passion. There's a 2024 Part 2 I plan to watch.

The story is very high concept and the tone is completely aware of itself, leading to a truly enjoyable experience

It’s all eye candy and spectacle, all a bit much and pointlessly hard to follow. But make no mistake, this is something to see, even if making sense of it can feel more trouble than it’s worth.

Austin Chronicle
Alienoid is so big in its ambition that it rarely coheres, and sequences in each time period go on for so long that the other era, and all its characters, fall away. But the characters are overwhelmingly entertaining, most especially Jo and Yum as the hapless monster hunters who are promised much bigger things if Part 2 ever happens.

Screen Daily
Hamstrung by lumbering plotting and variable special effects, this first part is an unimaginative hodgepodge which leaves its well-assembled cast stranded across time and space.

Alienoid is a movie that wants to be everything and satisfy everyone, and when you try to satisfy everyone, you invariably end up satisfying no one.

A Chaotic but Enjoyably Ambitious Sci-Fi Fantasy Blending B-Movie Charm with Big-Budget Superhero Spectacle.220828 (3.0)Because I naturally love time travel, extraterrestrials, and superhero tropes, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film, which felt like a blend of B-movie charm and Marvel-style blockbuster ambition. It tried to pack so many sprawling ideas that the narrative felt somewhat noisy and chaotic, yet that almost seemed inevitable given the sheer scale of the universe it aimed to establish. However, the recurring audio balance issues typical of Korean cinema—where booming background sound effects overpower human dialogue, making lines difficult to discern clearly—along with the Taoist mage Muruk lacking distinct charisma and psychological depth, left noticeable regrets. Nevertheless, Kim Tae-ri remains an absolute delight to watch as always. Jeon Yeo-been makes a striking appearance as the very first escaped convict. Kim Woo-bin plays both the cybernetic Guard and the human projection of Thunder. Aliens imprison their convicts inside human brains, and when those prisoners occasionally break out, the cyborg Guard and his AI vehicle robot Thunder hunt them down, equipped with nanotech armor that shifts forms much like Iron Man's suit across various timelines. Pitying a human infant whose mother was used by an escaped alien and subsequently eliminated by Guard, Thunder takes the baby back to the year 2012; though one wonders about bacterial vulnerability, perhaps the modern era is cleaner. Ryu Jun-yeol's slick Taoist mage Muruk feels reminiscent of "Jeon Woo-chi," delivering similar lines while chasing bounties, though the character himself leaves a rather flat impression. His twin cat familiars tucked inside his magic fan, Right Paw and Left Paw, serve as loyal sidekicks, and the seasoned character actor who clashes with him in the opening bout—familiar from "Hot Stove League"—is such a joy to watch. Just as Kim Yoon-seok's formidable master disciplined Jeon Woo-chi, here Dong-ryong's father from "Reply 1988" appears as an invincible high master, only to be struck down almost immediately by an alien convict; he is later revealed to be Muruk's childhood mentor. Muruk eventually stumbles upon a crashed alien spacecraft. Meanwhile, the rescued child, Ean, grows into an elementary schooler who already deduces that her father is an alien cyborg who took her as a baby, even figuring out that the vehicle robot Thunder shares his human likeness; she proves to be a prodigy, planting a tracking and wiretapping 2G flip phone inside the car, recalling conversations Thunder had with her in childhood assuming she was too young to remember. When Thunder tries to send her away to keep escort transport secrets safe, she heads directly to Jisan Hospital, where roughly two hundred humans are forcibly implanted with alien prisoners. So Ji-sub and Kim Eui-sung appear as human vessels harboring dangerous alien convicts. Leaving bicycles parked randomly on public sidewalks without locking them up in designated racks looks amusingly careless. Yum Jung-ah and Jo Woo-jin portray the sorcerer duo Madam Black and Mr. Blue, rocking utterly eccentric makeup. Kim Tae-ri appears as a disguised bride at a wedding where Muruk infiltrates as the groom to steal the mystical alien blade. In the Goryeo dynasty setting, Kim Tae-ri incongruously wields a modern pistol and wears a wristwatch, claiming the Divine Blade originally belongs to her. The shadowy Goryeo faction Milbon, led by the mysterious Jajang, commands warriors using alien technology while wearing the exact same wristwatch, acting essentially like an alien outpost. The real bride who was swapped out is played by the charming actress from "The School Nurse Files." Ean records video footage of the alien invasion and shares it with her friend and her friend's aunt, played by Lee Hanee, who harbors a crush on Guard. The post-dubbing creates a jarring dissonance where lip movements feel detached from the audio and ambient effects; dialogue is drowned out while sound effects detonate abruptly, causing constant startling spikes. Lore reveals that an advanced alien civilization achieved planetary peace but saw violent mutant outcasts arise; unable to execute them, they imprisoned these consciousnesses inside human brains so the convicts would naturally perish when their human hosts die of natural causes. Detective Moon Do-seok, played by So Ji-sub, develops superhuman hearing after being implanted, tracking down and brutally executing corrupt officers. A massive spacecraft descends for this prisoner and hacks Thunder. The cyborg descending from the ship proclaims that he will use Guard's energy to liberate the Great Architect, the rebel leader among the convicts. The energy source sought by the cyborg is none other than the Divine Blade pursued across Goryeo, identical to the energy blade housed inside Guard's thigh; stabbing this blade into an im
