The thrill of the unpredictable was the driving force behind this charming and spirited rogue-like heister.
A game like a comic book, driven by its snarky story. Gameplay suffers from weak gunplay and repetition, though.

If more attention was paid to story and less to grind, Void Bastards could potentially rival System Shock. As it is, however, it’s basically just another roguelike. [Issue#241, p.50]

While you will get enjoyment and value out of it; you're going to have to work for your entertainment, because this game is not interested in working to bring it to you.

Its pretty good. I sunk some hours into this one. Its probably the only decent shooter offline on switch lite. I beat the loop like 5-6 times before I set it down. The art style and setting is unique and the humor is pretty good too. Eventually the loops run its course and you don't necessarily see every combination the game has to offer but once you get as deep as it goes its just to crazy to me really. I feel like I absolutely can’t win or grab the key item on those levels because the parameters are just to tight.

Void **** is an overall good and certainly unique game that uses some interesting ideas to its gameplay and presentation. It combines some first person shooting with a lot of scavenging/looting, some strategy elements and a lot of crafting. The graphics and combat though having a really unique artstyle can feel a bit underwhelming. It is a good game but it is certainly not on the same level with some of the games it takes inspiration from.

Void Bastards is a terrific game that balances the joy of exploration with the fear of failure in a wonderful way. It could use some more incentives to keep playing, but it's a blast while it lasts.

Think of this game as if FTL was an FPS. I absolutely loved the world building, lore and the atmosphere and the British accent and humor really made it stand out. The only thing I didn't like was that the UX suffered a bit due to the comic like UI. Also, I started loving this game more when I started playing at as an actual roguelite and not as Borderlands. You do NOT need to loot everything on a ship. Take what you need and move on!

Void Bastards offers a unique mix of strategy, roguelike, and shooting. Though the environments are not very different from each other and the confrontations with enemies aren't great, the variation in levels and characteristics of your player make Void Bastards great fun.

Although it would benefit from being either a bit shorter and/or having a bit more variety, Void Bastards is easy to recommend. It looks unique and has enough fun baked in that failure rarely feels frustrating or punishing. Fans of action games as diverse as Bioshock or FTL will enjoy it and anyone who chuckles at games like The Stanley Parable will feel at home with Void Bastards’ sense of absurd humor.

It fits together disparate genres so perfectly that you wonder how nobody thought to combine them sooner.

Void Bastards is more than just a beautiful game, it also has a smart mix of rogue-lite and shooter. It’s a funny little game offering many tactical choices but it doesn’t go much further, and soon becomes repetitive.

Void Bastards draws easily the attention thanks to its charming comic aesthetic and to the cel shaded visuals. Moreover, its frenetic pace means that you could spend less than an hour at a time and yet feel like you have a fulfilling experience. Alas, the different enemy types and spaceship designs start to get repetitive a little too soon, changing the sense of excitement to tedium far before the rescue of our ragtag group.

In a colorful cartoon-ish yet cynical universe, Where medical operations are set in a theater, Where aliens are just bored tourists, This game is Rogue FPS where you must scavenge all kind of stuffs to progress in the story. It can be punishing, trapping you in a burning spaceship with the most dangerous foes in the galaxy... Or it can be merciful and grant you a ton of loot in a spaceship where all aliens are your allies ! But don't worry, you can finish the game while staying at the lowest difficulty... It would be long but it can be done ! Of course, you would be sparring yourself from the strive of battle, of loot and danger ! When you manage to survive after defeating the strongest foes, dodging the viciously traps on the way and facing the hazards... The game rewards you pretty well. It's not a stunning and brave AAA game, but it has it charms : the cartoon-ish style make the cynical universe possible, dying is not punishing so you can take risks and get higher loots, few type of enemies but each of them makes you adopt a new strategy. Don't miss the ending, it's hilarious !

I'm giving this game a 7. I love system shock. I love Bioshock. I love Prey, Stalker, Deus Ex, and Fallout (New Vegas) lol. This game has some of that , its pretty, and it does have fun moments. There is a but, and it's one that I don't think has been talked about enough because i believe most people write reviews with under an hour play time. The loop gets boring quickly. I said it, and believe me I WANTED TO PLAY THIS GAME FOR MONTHS. But after about 10 hours I really just don't see the point. The missed the mark with lack of story, they could have made a rouge lite with audio logs to push you forward like all the games its trying to be like. The game is good, but don't go in thinking its going to stay fresh for long.

Could've been a great game, but the creators were so hell-bent on making this game old school they had completely abandoned any common sense. So you're telling me that someone is freeing those prisoners only to send them on missions almost butt-naked, with no medicaments, a five minute worth of oxygen and only a handful of ammo, yet that someone expects them to succeed? It doesn't make any sense whatsoever. For a game that seems so keen on reviving the old school spirit of games like System Shock and Bioshock, it certainly doubles down on their negative aspects, yet offers little to no positives, which is the exact opposite of what a good spiritual successor is meant to do.

SummaryInspired by BioShock and System Shock 2, Void Bastards is a new strategy-shooter that will test your wits as well as exercise your aim. Can you lead the misfit prisoners of the Void Ark through the derelict spaceships and myriad dangers of the Sargasso Nebula?
