This is a game with style, substance, and its own great blend of action and strategy, and for now is an iOS exclusive to boot. If you have any love for Sid Meier, strategy games, aviation sims, or just darn good games you'd be crazy to not give this game a shot.
Having played so many of the Firaxis' games and having spent so much time learning their intricate mechanics, I'm pleased to report the simple elegance of Sid Meier's Ace Patrol doesn't diminish the satisfaction and underlying depth the studio is known for.
Sid Meier's first original mobile IP is a deep and clever strategy game, mixing the idea behind SteamBirds with the hexagonal grid of the classic boardgames.
After porting all of its classics successfully to iOS, Sid Meier proves himself once again with Ace Patrol. It feels wonderfully refreshing and the dogfights combine accessibility with an intelligent layer of tactics. It's ruthless when failing a mission though, but that's compensated by a look that breathes sympathy and fun multiplayer modes.
Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol (Free, Universal) is a finely crafted strategic aerial assault that soars in the App Store providing such a worthwhile download.
Ace Patrol shines in its mechanics and may very well become a good game after a steady progression of updates. As it stands now, this one could use some more time in flight school.
The concept is interesting but too soon everything will be sacrificed to in-app-purchases that are forced by design dead ends that can just be solved by spending money. This is pay-to-win at its worst…
An amazingly original take on strategy. No building mines, baracks, and cranking out endless steamroller waves of troops. It's just you, your wingman, and the enemy. Each turn matters, because on wrong move means the enemy gets the drop on you and shreads your plane. Its all about realistic physics, flight mechanics, positioning for optimum firing paths, and working with your wingman to set up crossfires, or decoys. Taking realistic flight physics and turning them into a grid based strategy game? Only Sid M. could have pulled that off. I love this game. The only reason it didn't get a higher score was because it was a little light on the extras. Not much in the way of story telling, the leveling system is mediocre, etc. But none of that stops it from being a great game that is totally worth the price.
